Spend a Second Summer at Genesis - and get College Credit!
In Summer 2009 Genesis Launched a Pilot Program to Allow Participants to Return for a Second Summer
For years Genesis participants and their families finished the summer bemoaning the fact that they would not be able to return to the Brandeis campus for a second summer at Genesis. This past summer, we launched a pilot program for a select group of Genesis participants from the summer of 2008 to return to Genesis for a second summer - this time to receive college credit! Due to the success of this pilot summer, we are offering 2009 alumni the same opportunity.
Frequently Asked Questions about returning for a second summer at Genesis:
What course will I be taking?
The students in the pilot alumni program will together take Brandeis University undergraduate course for credit. The course offered in summer 2009 is THA 15B - Public Speaking: The Art of Oral Communication. The instructor is Jennifer Cleary.
Public speaking is an important and useful skill to learn and practice, one that many people never have the opportunity to learn. The skills learned in this course will serve you well as you move from high school to college and beyond. Also looks great on a college application!
In the course you will be able to use the flexibility of the assignments to work at your own pace and develop your own individual skills. You can use topics of personal interest for your presentations, and you will have opportunities to try out different varieties of speeches, such as storytelling, informative speech, taking a critical position on something, a persuasive speech, dvar Torah(word of Torah), interviews, and personal narratives. This course is appropriate for a variety of skill levels, from the novice speaker, to a more experienced speaker looking for a place to focus and develop stronger skills.
How many college credits will I receive?
The course is the equivalent of a full semester course at Brandeis. Successful completion of the course will give you 4 college credits. The credits can be applied to any degree at Brandeis, and should be transferable to other universities (though you should check with the specific school's registrar).
How many people will be in the course?
In order to provide the best possible experience, we are keeping the group limited to 8-12 participants.
What other activities will I be involved in at Genesis?
Aside from course time and study/work sessions, participants will participate in all other Genesis programming (community life, Shabbat programming, workshops, etc) along with the other Genesis participants. Our staff will work with you to find appropriate leadership roles and opportunities for further contributing to the community and getting the most out of a second Genesis experience.
