Dean's Medal for Distinguished Leadership
The Dean's Medal for Distinguished Leadership, the School's highest honor, is awarded by the dean and the faculty of the International Business School to individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to knowledge or practice in the international economy and to the well-being of people worldwide.

Past Recipients

2002 Yutaka Kawashima, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs (retired), Japan
The Dean's Medal was conferred on Mr. Kawashima on the occasion of his Address at the Eighth Commencement of the International Business School, for a lifetime of distinguished contributions to international cooperation, including as Japan's Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, his country's most senior diplomatic post. His many assignments around the world included challenging postings in South Vietnam and South Korea, and service as Japan's Ambassador to Israel.

2003 Paul Steiger, Managing Editor, The Wall Street Journal
The Dean's Medal was conferred on Mr. Steiger on the occasion of his Address at the Ninth Commencement of the International Business School, for extraordinary contributions to business journalism. Under his leadership, the Wall Street Journal has won 10 Pulitzer Prizes and has become the bible to those interested in economic affairs: it is superbly informed, analytically sophisticated, and always interesting.

2004 Ronald Daniel, Managing Partner (retired), McKinsey & Company
The Dean's Medal was conferred on Mr. Daniel on the occasion of his Address at the Tenth Commencement of the International Business School, for exceptional achievements in two worlds: in business, as Managing Partner of McKinsey & Company, and in education, as Chair of the Trustees of Wesleyan University, Treasurer of Harvard University, and Trustee of Brandeis University. His leadership has set new standards of excellence in strategy and financial management.

2004 Richard M. Rosenberg, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (retired), Bank of America
The Dean's Medal was conferred on Mr. Rosenberg, who delivered the Address at the Sixth Commencement of the International Business School, for a career of exceptional innovation and leadership. As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, "he brought [Bank of America] all the way back to its place as one of the great banks of the world" (FinancialWorld, 1996). As board member, he shared his wisdom and resources generously with many institutions, including the San Francisco Symphony, the San Francisco United Way, the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation, the California Institute of Technology, and the Brandeis International Business School.

2005 Thomas H. Lee, Founder, Thomas H. Lee Partners
The Dean's Medal was conferred on Mr. Lee, the brilliant entrepreneur and founder of Thomas H. Lee Partners, on the occasion of his Address at the Eleventh Commencement of the International Business School. His pioneering style of "friendly" acquisitions of mid-sized companies, followed by the strategic rebuilding of their businesses, created a remarkably successful company and transformed the private equity industry.

2005 Vaclav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic
The Dean's Medal was conferred on Dr. Klaus on the occasion of his special address to the students and faculty of Brandeis University, for his sustained, courageous and visionary leadership of the people of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic in their quest for freedom, opportunity and prosperity.
