MA Career Paths
The MA program's emphasis on economics, finance, and quantitative analysis equips our graduates to "add value" to a wide range of organizations in the private and public sectors. Most often, MAs pursue careers in financial institutions, economic and financial consulting firms, and in the financial or planning departments of companies, governments, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations.
Positions after Graduation
On leaving IBS, graduates are typically recruited to be an analyst or associate in an investment bank; consultant, researcher or tax analyst in a consulting company; equity or fixed income analyst in an asset management company, or budget analyst, project manager or policy analyst in a company, government or non-profit organization.
The first position of a graduate depends in part on his/her work experience prior to IBS. For example, some companies hire only graduates with several years of pre-MA work experience for "associate" positions. MAs typically receive starting salaries ranging from $50,000 for positions that require limited prior experience, to $100,000 or more for more senior posts.
Career Advancement
IBS alumni tend to rise rapidly in their companies, even if they enter on a relatively junior level because of limited prior work experience. For example, alumni who graduated over the past decade now occupy positions such as Managing Director of Municipal Finance in a major investment bank, Partner for Emerging Markets in an investment bank, Minister of the Economy in an Eastern European country, and Director of Macroeconomic Research in a large bank.
Companies and Organizations
Alumni have accepted positions in companies and organizations such as JP Morgan/Chase, the US Census, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Merrill Lynch, Knight Libertas, and many others. They are spread widely across the world, with about one-third are located outside the United States in countries such as the UK, Ghana, France, Germany, and Taiwan.
