MBA Admission Requirements

Standardized Tests

Is the GRE or GMAT required?
We view standardized test scores as a part of the applicant's total application, but not the most important part. While we don't require a specific score, a GMAT score of 550 and above, or the equivalent on the GRE test is preferred. Click here for more information on GMAT and GRE comparisons.
We prefer a minimum of two years full-time work experience for the MBA program, with an undergraduate GPA of 3.2.

Is the TOEFL required?
If you are an international applicant, your application must include an official score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS), unless your native language is English or you completed four years of study at an undergraduate institution (or two year at a graduate institution) in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand. A TOEFL score of 600 on the paper-based exam or 90 on the internet-based exam is usually required, or an IELTS score of 7.0 is required. An official English translation of academic documents is also required.

What is the Brandeis code for TOEFL/GRE/GMAT?
The code for Brandeis IBS is 3122.

Am I required to have work experience?
Work experience is valued highly in our admissions decisions, and two years of full-time work experience is preferred for admission to the MBA program.

Must I have background in economics to apply for the MBA program?
No, but it helps to have taken at least one course in economics. If you haven’t, you may take a half-semester course at IBS in your first year that provides the necessary foundation in micro-economics for business. You may also decide to take such an introductory course on your own during the summer before enrollment; if you do, we recommend a general introduction to economics or to microeconomics at a major university.

Do I need a strong background in mathematics or statistics?
No, but you do need to be comfortable with numerical analysis and it helps to have taken at least some statistics. If you haven’t taken a statistics course, you may take a half-semester course at IBS in your first year that provides the necessary foundation in quantitative methods. The core requirements for the graduation include at least one more course in quantitative methods.
