Boston February 2013 - Second Annual Women in Business Dinner with Tania Zouikin

Tania Zouikin, former Chairman of Batterymarch Financial, joined a group of Brandeis IBS alumni and staff members for an intimate dinner  at Avila in downtown Boston. The group benefited from hearing about Tania's experience in the business world, and joined in on a lively Q&A discussion for the remainder of the evening.

New York November 2012 - Second Annual Women in Finance Dinner

On November 15, a gathering of Brandeis IBS and University alumnae took place at the Muse Hotel in New York City. The evening was the Second Annual Women in Finance Dinner, hosted by Amy Kessler '89, MA '90, and featuring Christine Marcks, President of Prudential Retirement. Attendees enjoyed a lively, yet intimate conversation around what it is like to be a woman working in the fields of finance and business, and other hot-button issues.

New York October 2012 - Annual Alumni-Student Networking Reception

New York 2012

On October 8, over 50 alumni gathered in New York for the Annual Alumni-Student Networking Reception. Members of our Career Services staff traveled with 50 students to the event, which featured remarks from Professor Alfonso Canella. The evening allowed for students and alumni to share and compare their Brandeis IBS experiences. Members of the New York Alumni Committee met with students one-on-one throughout the evening to review resumes and provide interview advice.

Hong Kong October 2012 - Faculty Presentation and Networking

Hong Kong 2012

On October 9, Brandeis IBS and University alumni gathered in Hong Kong for a faculty presentation by David Keller, Managing Director of Research for Fidelity Investments in Boston, and adjunct professor at Brandeis IBS. Professor Keller presented his findings on how technical analysts at Fidelity have been visualizing the financial markets for decades, and how they've used these tools to advise portfolio managers. Alumni enjoyed the opportunity to network throughout the evening and engage with Professor Keller.

London October 2012 - Alumni Reception and European Challenge Launch

Alumni from the UK and surrounding countries gathered at the Chesterfield Mayfair Hotel on October 4th to network and hear brief remarks from alumnus and Board of Overseers member Georg Muzicant '02, MA '03 and alumnus Matthias Wurmboeck, MBA '11. The two launched the Brandeis IBS European Giving Challenge; every gift made from an alum living in Europe will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $20,000, by Georg and Matthias. The funds raised will support the tuition of a student from Europe next year.

San Francisco September 2012 - Alumni Technology Presentation at GigaOm

Over 25 alumni in the San Francisco area gathered at the GigaOm office for an evening of cocktails, networking, and a keynote. The presentation, entitled "It's All About Tech and You Don't Even Know It: How Technology Permeates Everything We Do," was given by Om Malik, Founder and Senior Writer at GigaOm. The event was hosted by alumni Paul Walborsky '88, MA '89 and Liann (Schottenstein) Walborsky '88. Brandeis IBS Dean Bruce Magid made brief remarks, and enjoyed a great evening with a diverse group of alumni.

Brandeis IBS Professor Alfonso Canella, along with Assistant Director for Development, Matt Magida, traveled to Mexico in August for the launch of the Latin American Intiative. The trip included visits to various business partners and universities in the area, with the hope of creating ties between Brandeis IBS and these institutions. The Initiative seeks to increase the Brandeis IBS presence in the region and to recruit more students from Latin American countries. The photos featured here are from a reception held during the visit to Mexico.

On August 10, 2012, members of the Brandeis community gathered for a casual dinner in Shanghai, China. Twenty alumni of the International Business School and greater University attended the event, which was hosted by Robin Tyrangiel '04, MA '05. The dinner served as a wonderful kickoff for the 2012-2013 programming year.


 
Berlin July 2012 - World Financial Centers Trip and Alumni Dinner

On July 6, 2012, members of the Brandeis community joined students and staff from the Brandeis IBS World Financial Centers trip for a dinner in Berlin. The dinner served as a farewell to the students participating in the WFC trip, who spent the week participating in lectures and talks by German academics, business leaders, commentators, and officials. The trip took them to Leipzig, Freiberg, and Berlin, and was led by Brandeis IBS professors John Ballantine and Jens Hilscher. 


Istanbul May 2012 - 2nd Annual Cruise on the Bosphorus

On May 28, Brandeis IBS hosted the 2nd Annual Cruise on the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Turkey. Over 20 alumni, parents, and friends of the business school and University gathered aboard for an enjoyable evening. They were joined by current Brandeis IBS students participating in the Hassenfeld Immersion Trip to Turkey, led by Professors Can Erbil and Brad Morrison and Program Coordinator for Student Services, Matt Rocker.

Boston May 2012 - 7th Annual Future Alumni Donor Reception, featuring Wendy Weiss, MBA '01
FADR 2012

The 7th Annual Future Alumni Donor Reception took place on Wednesday, May 16 at the Mandel Center for the Humanities at Brandeis University. Over 25 alumni attended the event along with faculty and staff to congratulate and welcome the 2012 graduates to the global alumni community.  The program for the evening was developed by the Future Alumni Committee, who presented videos and slideshows reflecting on their time at the business school. Alumni remarks were provided by Wendy Weiss, MBA '01. This year, Dean Bruce Magid challenged the second-year class to get at least 50% giving participation before the FADR. The class reached almost 60% participation, setting a wonderful precedent for future commitment to Brandeis IBS.

On Wednesday, April 25, 2012, Brandeis IBS alumni in the Boston-area gathered for a presentation on Image Management at Work by Professor Sandra Cha. The evening continued with a Q&A featuring James Elterman, MBA '04, and Brandeis IBS Associate Director for Corporate Relations, Katherine Prum. Over 40 alumni joined us at the Langham Hotel for an informative and opportunistic evening.

Paris April 2012 - Brandeis and Business: Trends in Marketing with Grace Zimmerman

On Tuesday, April 10, Brandeis IBS Professor Grace Zimmerman met with Brandeis University and Brandeis IBS alumni and friends in Paris for a discussion at the Galerie de Bayser. The intimate group discussed current trends in global business marketing and shared memories of enjoyable experiences at both the University and the business school.

Boston March 2012 - Student, Staff, and Faculty Visit to EMC Headquarters

On Friday, March 23, Brandeis International Business School led a group of students to EMC headquarters in Hopkinton, MA, to listen, learn and network with EMC executives and alumni. A highlight of the visit included an EMC Brandeis alumni panel featuring Cristina Gotia, MBA '08; John Hose '96; Jon Louis, MBA '08 and Basuki Winoto, MBA '09.  Current student Jessica Stanford, MBA '12, enjoyed the opportunity to hear from the group: "I liked having the chance to be in a room with Brandeis alumni who have gone on to have successful careers at the same company. It didn't feel like the typical panel discussion - even though some of the panelists graduated some time ago, we all come from the same school and the same community, and therefore had an unspoken bond which made it feel like we were conversing with friends."

New York February 2012 - Private Equity Discussion with Michael McKay

On February 29, Brandeis International Business School hosted a presentation and discussion on private equity, led by Brandeis IBS Adjunct Professor Michael McKay. Over fifty alumni in the area joined in for an engaging and informative evening at Benoit Bistro. The evening was a great success, much in part of the work done by the Brandeis IBS Alumni Chapter of New York and our alumni volunteers. On December 6,  Brandeis IBS hosted a “Women in Business and Innovation” panel discussion and dinner in Boston.  A dynamic and engaging group of thirty-six alumnae attended the event. The distinguished panel included Barbara Clarke, MA '91, National Director for the National Alliance of Grieving Children; Emily Rumanek, MA '07, MBA '09, Senior Analyst at Observant LLC; Nisha Sheth, MA '00, Director of Transaction Services at PwC; as well as Brandeis IBS Senior Lecturers Brenda Anderson and Grace Zimmerman.

On November 10,  Brandeis IBS hosted a “Women in Finance” panel discussion and dinner in New York City.  An impressive group of twenty-four alumnae attended the event from a range of class years with different industry experience in investment
banking, marketing, valuation and private equity. The distinguished panel included Amy Kessler ’89, MA ’90, SVP and head of Longevity Reinsurance within Prudential Retirement's Pension Risk Transfer business; Elida Reci, MA ’99, Governance and Public Administration Officer for the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA); Violeta Sacara, MA ’08, Assistant Vice President at Barclays Capital working as a trader on the municipal derivatives desk, and Ruxandra Balasov, MBA ’01, VP, Energy Commodities Finance at BNP Paribas.  The panelists began their careers during different economic
climates, and together, their leadership experience showcased how far women have come in the field of finance.

Brandeis alumni and friends gathered in London on October 20, 2011 for a cocktail reception at the Hilton London Green Park Hotel. "Thriving in Turbulent Times" was hosted by Brandeis IBS and featured remarks and discussion by Dean Bruce Magid on the changing global economic landscape, new initiatives taking place at the business school, and strategic plans for the future. Over 40 alumni and staff were present for a great evening in London.

Brandeis IBS hosted its Annual Alumni-Student Cocktail Reception in New York at The National Restaurant on October 13. Over 100 alumni and students gathered for an evening of networking and a presentation on the changing global economic landscape by Brandeis IBS Professor Alfonso Canella. Members of our alumni relations, development, and career services staff made introductions and caught up with familiar faces.

Brandeis IBS hosted its first event in Paris at the end of June at Dorothy's Gallery. Over 25 alumni from the Brandeis community attended the event, which focused on building the university's global alumni network with professionals from the worlds of business, commerce, and academia. John Ballantine, IBS Professor and Director of the MSF Program, spoke about the future of the EU, with a particular focus on the current state of Greece. Hosts Jill Danger '71 and Hugues Blondet, MA '02, facilitated the event.

Alumni from the Boston area gathered at the Fireside Lounge in Ames Hotel on March 22, 2011 for our first ever thank you celebration to local alumni who responded to the Kessler Challenge by making a gift to the Peter Petri Global Fellowship.  Mark Goldberger MBA ’09, a beneficiary of the scholarship himself, emphasized the importance of the Peter Petri Global Fellowship in rewarding talented students at IBS, and appealed to his fellow alums to give back to their alma mater. Nearly 50 alums attended the event and enjoyed themselves over complimentary cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres.

The Brandeis University Greater China Alumni Association celebrated the launch of the Hong Kong chapter with a reception and dinner hosted by Tony Chang PhD '83. Almost 30 alumni were welcomed by Tony who spoke about the importance of being part of the Brandeis family. Robin Tyrangiel '04, MA '05 and Aviva Zyskind '09, who flew in from Beijing to represent the newly formed club, touched on the importance of giving back to Brandeis and creating a regional alumni organization to grow the school's reputation. They gathered feedback and recruited alumni volunteers for future events. The Hong Kong event was the club's second after the initial meeting in Beijing in November 2010. Future events will follow in other cities including Shanghai.

Brandeis alumni and friends from the New York City area joined us on January 12, 2011 for the Brandeis IBS Sixth Annual New Year's Celebration.  This year featured a dynamic and engaging conversation with Bernard Schwartz, an industrialist, philanthropist and progressive public policy advocate.  The keynote address was sponsored by the Perlmutter Institute for Global Business Leadership and Louis Perlmutter '56, founder of the institute and a Brandeis trustee, served as moderator.  We were also pleased to have President Frederick M. Lawrence deliver introductory remarks.  Despite the weather, nearly 100 Brandeis alums and friends attended the event.  To read more about the event, click here

Brandeis IBS hosted its first alumni event in Istanbul, Turkey on January 5. Assistant Professor of Economics Can Erbil and Assistant Professor of Finance Elif Sisli Ciamara had cocktails and dinner with 15 alums to discuss developments taking place at the business school as well as introduce the new Hassenfeld Fellow Overseas Immersion Program. The program is a week-long, in-country experience available to first year IBS students and will give participants an intensive introduction to the business and economy of Turkey. Professor Erbil will return to Istanbul in May 2011 with 30 IBS students and looks forward to seeing Brandeis alums again. Beijing November 2010

beijing Brandeis hosted its first event in China at the end of November at the home of Roberta Lipson ’76 in Beijing.  Nearly 40 alumni and students attended the networking event "Brandeis and Business: Beijing and Beyond."  Lipson, Co-founder and CEO of Chindex International, Inc., spoke movingly about her years at Brandeis and the encouragement she received to pursue a business career in Asia at a time when few were choosing that path.  In addition, Tony Chang PhD ’83,  made a special visit from Hong Kong to talk about his passion for Brandeis and the need to support the university’s scholarship program.  Similar gatherings for alumni are being discussed for Shanghai and Hong Kong in the coming year.

 Jan 11 Alumni In November, close to 130 IBS alums, friends and current students attended the Boston "Hot Trends in Wine" Networking event at the Exchange Conference Center.  The event was hosted by Legal Sea Foods and featured a tasting of wines from around the globe.  Roger Berkowitz, President of Legal Sea Foods and member of the IBS Board of Overseers, welcomed everyone to the event.  Sandy Block, Master of Wine and VP of Beverage at Legal Sea Foods provided a presentation on wine selections from Argentina, California, New Zealand and South Africa.  This was our first alumni and current student networking reception in the Boston area.

 Jan 11 Alumni In October, over 40 alumni attended the networking reception “Brandeis and Business: London and Beyond” at the Hilton London Green Park.  Attendees were welcomed by Michael Appell, MA '79, Executive Director of Development and External Affairs; Joan Bovarnick, PhD '69, President of the Brandeis Club of Great Britain and Elana Givens, Assistant Dean of Career Services.  During the reception, Michael discussed Brandeis' impact on the business world as well as the new undergraduate business major. This is the first of many international alumni events being planned with the central alumni relations office.

 May 06 Alumni In May 2010, IBS hosted a networking event and panel discussion "Strategies for Thriving in the New Global Economy: Lessons Learned from IBS Alumni" at the W Boston Hotel for local area alumni and friends.Panelists included Wilfred Chilangwa '90, MA '91, Fidelity; Mirtha (Arguello) Kastrapeli, MA '07, State Street Global Advisors; Zenobia Moochhala, MA '98, Care.com; Johannes Pfeifenberger, MA '91, The Brattle Group who shared their insights about how the financial crisis affected their industry.  Close to 50 IBS alums attended this event.

IBS Alumni were invited to join Professor Ballantine and Associate Dean Tren Dolbear to discuss "The Jobless Recovery, Changes Ahead for the Global Economy" in downtown Boston in December. Christopher Probyn, Chief Economist, State Street Global Advisors gave a stimulating presentation on global and US economic prospects for 2010. After his remarks, Professor John Ballantine and Ying Becker, MSF '01- Vice President of State Street Global Advisors and head of the US/Global Active Equity Research Group for the Advanced Research Center (ARC)- commented on Mr. Robyn's positive outlook. Close to 50 alumni attended this event to network with friends, staff and faculty.

Future Alumni Dinner in May 2009

The Fourth Annual Future Alumni Donor Dinner is held each year at the Brandeis Faculty Club the Wednesday before commencement.  A Future Alumni Committee, consisting of second year students,  is elected by Dean Magid to work closely with the IBS Development Staff to raise awareness for the class gift, which is donated each year to the Peter Petri Global Fellowship.  The dinner is an evening of appreciation to thank the graduating class for their contributions to IBS scholarships, celebrate the upcoming graduation and launch the graduating class into the IBS global alumni network.

IBS Alumni in the Boston Area joined Dean Bruce Magid for a pre-reception at the Boston Harbor Hotel in February to discuss developments at the business school.  After the reception,  Dean Bruce Magid and Dean Lisa Lynch of the Heller School discussed the "State of the Economy and Investing" with Brandeis alumni and friends at Goulston and Storrs.  Their presentations explored the deep impacts of the economic downturn and consider how to make matters better.
