Profile
Professor Appell began working at IBS in June of 2001, where, in addition to teaching, he serves as Executive Director of Development and External Affairs, as well as the IBS faculty advisor for Net Impact.
Michael spent 16 years as President of the Two/Ten International Footwear Foundation, the world’s largest industry-sponsored charitable organization. He has traveled extensively and worked with companies and corporate leaders in many parts of the world. He began his career at the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston, which became the first federated philanthropy in 1895 and set the model for the United Way and numerous other corporate/community endeavors.
In addition to a strong “macro” interest in the ethics of globalization, Michael is particularly focused on helping students understand new models for interaction between corporations and the various communities they serve. He is a graduate of Brown University (Phi Beta Kappa) and received his M.A. from Brandeis.
In his 2009 “Corporations and Communities” course, speakers from a variety of companies will engage students in understanding how corporate social responsibility gets interpreted and expressed in their work settings. Speakers include Roger Berkowitz, President of Legal Sea Foods, Andrew Savitz, author of The Triple Bottom Line, Mike Lawrence, Executive Vice-President of Cone, Inc. and Susanne Goldstein, Founder of The Accelerator.
