Abstract:
Entrepreneurship literature suggests varied criteria for differentiating
entrepreneurial firms from “established” or managerial firms (e.g. age, size). However, this
literature does not discuss the transition from the former to the latter. Using institutional theory, I
propose that this transition occurs through environmental recognition of firm-level routines. By
conducting an exploratory analysis of three entrepreneurial biotech firms, I isolate the
relationship between recognition of firm-level routines and transition (or lack thereof). This
research has implication for empowering entrepreneurs and investors in taking strategic action as
well as for academics in furthering the entrepreneurship theory and research.
