Integrating Into the Global Marketplace, July 24 - August 4, 2006
The "Integrating Into the Global Marketplace" Program will examine policies and management issues that affect how developing countries can be integrated into the global marketplace in ways that enhance economic growth and reduce poverty. Topics covered include investment and technology transfer, international trade and economic growth, tax policy and administration, market regulation, and public-private partnerships. The program's structure and content complement that of the Macroeconomic Policy Program.
The program will provide you with a fundamental microeconomic framework and the analytical tools that will
enable you to:
- Understand the economic problems in your own country at the structural and sectoral level
- Draw insights from the latest research and policy findings on how to improve technology transfer and increase trade and investment
- Design and implement effective strategies for policy and regulatory reform
- Build public-private partnerships to improve the competitiveness of firms in the global marketplace

Program Format and Topics
The program consists of several modules woven together and applied toward participants' government, institution, and economic goals. Emphasis will be on acquiring the practical tools required to solve the most pressing problems related to integrating into the global marketplace that are faced by policy makers, business leaders, and others in developing countries.
The modules build upon each other, encompassing the following topics:
- Enhancing Investment and Technology Transfer
- Participating in the Benefits from International Trade
- Tax Policy and Administration
- Regulation and Competition
- Public-Private Partnerships

Who Should Attend
The "Integrating Into the Global Marketplace" Program is designed for participants from developing countries who are deeply committed to building the institutional foundations of an efficient, market-based economy. The primary audience includes senior and mid-level policy makers, business leaders, consultants, researchers, and analysts from:
- Government ministries and agencies focusing on finance, trade, investment, technology transfer, regulation, and competition
- Financial institutions
- Regulatory and promotional agencies
- National legislatures
- International development agencies
- Private businesses and professional associations

Distinguished Faculty
- Dirck Stryker is President and Chief Economist of Associates for International Resources and Development. He has over thirty years of field and teaching experience and has been instrumental in helping to build trade capacity and promote integration into regional and global markets.
- Rachel McCulloch is Professor of International Finance at Brandeis. She is an expert on international economic policy and has served as a consultant to the World Bank as well as several government agencies and foundations.
- Chad Bown is Assistant Professor of
Economics at Brandeis. He is a specialist in international trade laws and institutions. His research is currently focused on international trade disputes and the national use of trade laws, such as anti-dumping.
