CEO Forum: Barry Berman, Former CEO, Bradlees

The title of his talk is: "The Evolution of Supermarket and Discount Retailing"

In 1967 Barry Berman began his career with Stop & Shop as a junior auditor in their Internal audit department.  Over the next 23 years at S&S, he was given more and more responsibility and held the following positions: Store and Warehouse Accounting Manager; Asst. Controller; Administration Manager- Boston Division; Store District Manager-New Jersey Division; Sales Manager- Manufacturing Division; Advertising and Sales Promotion Manager; VP, Advertising; VP,Specialty Department Procurement and Marketing and VP,Perishable Departments Procurement and Marketing

In 1990, Mr. Berman was asked to join S&S sister company Bradlees. He was promoted to SR VP, Merchandising and Marketing and a year later  was named President. In 1992, S&S decided to spin off Bradlees and he helped take the company public. On July 12th 1992, Bradlees was listed on the NYSE and he was CEO and Chairman of the Board.

In 1994, Mr. Berman stepped down and retired. In 1995, the new CEO put Bradlees into chapter 11 bankruptcy.

From 1997-1999, Mr. Berman opened and operated a Bonsai Nursery.

In 2001, he was asked to rejoin S&S as EVP, Merchandising and Marketing and in preparation for his second retirement in 2005 he was named EVP, Special Projects (VIP transformation program).

In July 2007, Me. Berman retired for the second time. He still does a little consulting now and then.
