IBS Career Fair Opens Doors Despite Challenging Job Market

In February students gathered in Sherman Function Hall for the 2010 Graduate Career Fair. There were 22 companies in attendance, including returning firms such as Abt Bio-Pharma Solutions, Inc., Becker Professional Review, inSegment, Monster, Oxfam America, Virtua Research, and Zapoint.

New employers included AXA Advisors, LLC, By Appointment Only (BAO), Cintas Corporation, The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, e-Brainstorm Technologies, The Massachusetts Export Center, NCMFX, Inc., Robert Half Management Resources, State Street Associates, and the U.S. Department of Labor.

Three of the companies sent Brandeis alums to the career fair: Gordon Brothers Group, Property and Portfolio Research (PPR), and The U.S. Government Accountability Office were represented by Michael Chartock ’85, Shaw Lupton IBS MA ’05, and Tatiana Winger Heller MBA ’01, respectively.

One employer stated, “I was extremely pleased with the career fair. It was well organized and I have met a lot of excellent students that will be invited for an interview.” Another added, “The entire event was fabulous and it was a huge success in my opinion and would attend next year.”

Students agreed that the Career Fair was a success. “I think its going great,” said student representative Emily Geismar MA ‘11, “there’s been a really fluid transition between recruiters and students.” Elisa Guadiana Chong MBA ‘11 added, “It’s really well-organized.” Students recognized the benefits of an event such as this in a bad economy. “It’s a good chance to practice networking in a job market that is not so optimistic,” said Qin Xia MA ‘11, “It’s an opportunity to invest in the long-term.”

Katherine Prum, associate director for employer relations at IBS and the organizer of the event, said “despite a tough market we were all thrilled with the caliber of companies, and the number of jobs and internships they were looking to fill. They were so enthusiastically supportive of the students. A lot of work goes into these events, but it was a really good experience, for both the companies and the students.”
