Frontiers of International Economics and Finance

The PhD program offers rigorous training designed to lead students to the frontiers of research and policy in their fields of interest. The curriculum provides:

  • core methodological training in macro- and micro-economic theory, finance, and econometrics.
  • specialized expertise in two of four areas: international trade, international finance, international business, and development and institutions
  • advanced skills in applied research developed through papers, workshops, presentations, and the doctoral thesis.

Program of Study
After completing the first year, students take preliminary examinations in theory and econometrics. One or two years later, after completing field courses, they take examinations in two areas of specialization.

Students admitted to the Master of Science degree follow the same path as PhD candidates in their first two years of study, including course work, part of the theory examination, and/or a significant research paper. Both groups of students receive the Master of Science degree upon successful completion of two years of study. At this point, MS candidates who have performed at a superior level have the option of applying for admission into the PhD program.
