About the Institute

Objectives
The Rosenberg Institute addresses a key issue in international finance each year by commissioning research studies from faculty members at Brandeis and other institutions, by scheduling talks by visiting experts, by offering new courses, and hosting special meetings and fora. The Institute is committed to connecting IBS's and other academic research with the insights of business and policy leaders, and to use research to inform major global business and policy decisions.

The Institute, founded in 2002, is named for Barbara C. Rosenberg '54 and Richard M. Rosenberg.

International Advisory Board
The Institute's work is guided by an International Advisory Board composed of prominent individuals from business, government and academe, with expertise in the Institute's primary fields of interest. See a list of the members of the Board.

Professor Catherine L. Mann, Acting Director
Dr. Mann is an IBS professor in International Economics and Finance and Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington DC. Professor Mann’s expertise is in empirical international trade, exchange rates, globalization of information technology, venture capital, information technology and development. At a time when one in every 136 U.S. homes is in foreclosure and home values are down from their peak by about 30 percent, government officials and bankers continue to wrangle over the best way to end the sub-prime mortgage crisis. Recent Event

On Friday, October 16, 2009, the Rosenberg Institute of Global Finance presented an insightful forum on the global Economic Outlook.

The Panelists, Geoffrey Somes, Vice President & Senior Economist at State Street Global Advisors Economics Team, Sara Johnson, Managing Director, Global Macroeconomics, Country Analysis and Forecasting Group at IHS Global Insight, with Professor Catherine Mann moderating, each presented their views on the how soon will the US and global economies will recover, and how robust will that recovery be.

After Mr. Somes and Ms. Johnson spoke, a lively question and answer period followed.

Distinguished Panelists included:

Martin Feldstein, President Emeritus National Bureau of Economic Research and George F. Baker Professor of Economics; Richard M. Rosenberg, Chairman and CEO (retired), Bank of America; Allen L. Sinai, Chief Global Economist and President, Decision Economics, Inc.; and Professor Catherine L. Mann (Moderator).

This informative panel tackled the additional questions, "What additional short term actions, if any, should we be taking as a nation to help put businesses and employees back to work and to restore confidence? What additional actions should be considered to put the country on a healthy, stable track for the long term?"

US Monetary Policy Forum
This is the third year that the Rosenberg Institute of Global Finance has co-hosted the U.S. Monetary Policy Forum (USMPF). The USMPF is an annual conference that brings academics, market economists and policy makers together to discuss U.S. Monetary policy. It is co-sponsored by the Rosenberg Institute of Global Finance along with the Initiative on Global Markets at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. A standing group of academic and private sector economists (the USMPF panelists) has rotating responsibility for producing a report on a critical medium-term issue confronting the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC).

2009 USMPF
This year, the conference was held in NYC on Friday, February 27th. Ethan S. Harris, Bruce C. Kasman, Matthew D. Shapiro, and Kenneth D. West prepared the paper discussed at the morning session,

"Oil and the Macroeconomy: Lessons for Monetary Policy."

Christina Romer, Chair of the President's Council of Economic Advisors, gave the luncheon keynote address. Her speech was entitled: "The Case for the Economic Stimulus: The Likely Effects of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act."

The afternoon session featured panelists discussing, "Making Monetary Policy During a Financial Crisis."

Past Conferences
The 2008 conference was held on February 29 in New York City. Participants included presidents of various Federal Reserve Banks as well as Vincent Reinhart of the American Enterprise Institute who spoke at lunch. The conference began with the year's report, "Leveraged Losses: Lessons from the Mortgage Market Meltdown," which was prepared by David Greenlaw (Morgan Stanley), Jan Hatzius (Goldman Sachs), Anil Kashyap (Chicago Booth) and Hyun Shin (Princeton). The 2007 conference was held on March 9th in Washington, D.C. and featured a report on "Understanding the Evolving Inflation Process", which was written by Stephen G. Cecchetti, Peter Hooper, Bruce C. Kasman, Kermit L. Schoenholtz, and Mark W. Watson. The report is available online.
