Best Advice for 1st Years: Activities at Brandeis IBS would be 5 times human capacity so do not over commit or under commit. Strike a balance! Push yourself to do extra stuff, self development is guaranteed. Talk to different people and make the best use of the diversity Brandeis IBS provides, do not cling around a closed knit group. Lastly, work with career services right from September and start your internship search, it is serious work! By the way, enjoy the journey of your graduate program ;)
