A MULTINATIONAL COALMINE IN COLOMBIA DISPLACES INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES:
A Conversation with Aviva Chomsky
Time 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
Location International Lounge, Usdan

Description

Aviva Chomsky will examine extractivism in Latin America and the forced displacement of Wayúu villagers in Tamaquito, Colombia by the development of the international coal mining industry.

Avi Chomsky is Professor of History and Coordinator of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies at Salem State University. Her current research weaves together labor and environmental histories, focusing on a region of Colombia where Indigenous and Afro-descended peoples have long evaded state control. Today they face an onslaught of extractivist projects, and changing legal and social meanings of race and ethnicity in the context of continent-wide movements for plurinationalism and alternative visions of economic development.
