2008 Request for Proposals
The Office of Global Affairs (OGA) and the Office of the Provost are excited to announce a limited amount of seed funding to encourage the development of initiatives that support and enhance the development of Brandeis as a global institution. The Global Brandeis Fund is designed to support innovative efforts that stimulate a future-oriented, collaborative approach to the global dimension of the university.
Project Period: Calendar year 2008
Eligibility: Any regular faculty member of any rank, any full-time administrator, and/or any full-time undergraduate or graduate student is eligible to apply, representing a department, program, organization, office, or a collaboration among units. Proposals submitted by co-applicants are especially encouraged, although not required.
Criteria: Projects must:
a) Address an international or global dimension of teaching, learning, research or campus life at Brandeis
b) Embody strategic thinking about the development and achievement of long-term goals such as international experiences for students and faculty, new knowledge production, or increasing Brandeis’ international campus environment
c) Produce a tangible product or products that can be used, shown or distributed to members of the extended Brandeis community by February 15, 2009
In addition, projects must either:
a) Build upon or begin to develop a sustainable relationship between Brandeis and an institution, organization or community outside of the U.S. OR
b) Build upon or begin to develop a sustainable collaboration between units on the Brandeis campus or create a system for increased collaboration
The following are examples of types of projects that might qualify for funding:
- A faculty member seeks funding for Brandeis participation in an overseas research consortium that engages faculty and students in regional studies projects
- A student organization and an academic department work together on developing a publication and exposition that disseminates student writing and artwork related to a certain region
- Faculty and administrators from a graduate and undergraduate department develop a project that creates opportunities for interaction and collaboration between international graduate students and U.S. undergraduates
Duration: Funded projects are expected to be completed during the 2008 calendar year. Renewal of grants will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Responsibilities: Project directors will be expected to participate in a limited series of meetings during calendar year 2008 to guide the development of the Office of Global Affairs. As noted above, teams will be expected to product a tangible product or products that can be used, shown or distributed to the extended Brandeis community. Tangible outcomes include events, lectures, web sites, journals, blogs, abstracts, etc. Project directors will also be expected to submit a brief 1-page report at the conclusion of the project period.
Selection: All applications will be considered by an ad-hoc committee comprised of faculty, administrators and a student representative. Where appropriate, the committee will consider the proposal’s potential to attract further, external funding.
Grant Matching: The ad-hoc committee and the OGA may also look to match project directors together, where appropriate, to encourage collaboration.
Application: Please fill out the Global Brandeis Fund application and submit it with your proposal by Friday, February 15, 2008. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please forward materials by email to oga@brandeis.edu or to Bryan McAllister-Grande at MS 091.
Selections for 2008 will be announced by March 5, 2008.
