Study Abroad

On average 40% of the junior class studied abroad during the academic year while still more students took advantage of various international opportunities in the summer. There is a huge diversity of transformative experiences that Brandeis students have engaged in abroad including studying biodiversity conservation hands on in Panama, conducting ethnographic research on sacred figures in Mongolia, interning with Parliament in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, and interning in special education classrooms in Sydney, Australia to name a few.

There are over 350 approved programs in about 70 countries for students to choose from during the academic year. Building on strong connections in India, Israel and The Netherlands, Brandeis has developed three academic programs for undergraduate students.

Brandeis in The Hague

Students in this summer program will study in the historic Dutch city that has become a modern symbol in the search for global justice. They will explore first-hand how international courts confront a range of global problems; meeting with judges, advocates, and academic specialists for a broad survey of the international legal process. Students will live in the adjacent university town of Leiden and will have direct access to major tribunals sitting in The Hague; including the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the Peace Palace, and special war-crimes tribunals. They will also connect with research centers working on a variety of global issues; including ethnic violence, national and regional reconciliation, economic development, environmental policy, social rights, and responsive governance.

Brandeis University-Middlebury Program in Israel

The Brandeis University/Middlebury Program in Israel (BUMPI) is the first, and only, full Hebrew language immersion program in Israel.  In addition to Hebrew instruction and content-courses, you have various internship/volunteering options to choose form. The program location (Ben-Gurion University, Beer Sheva) promises effective and authentic immersion experience. The BGU campus – known for its strong and active Student Union – offers regular activities such as performances at the Student’s House, shows, day trips, and various cultural events.

Brandeis-India Science Scholars Program

Along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, India, the Brandeis Office of Study Abroad, with the Division of Science has developed an exchange program for students interested in studying biology, chemistry, physics, math, and computer science.  Along with classes taught in English by Indian faculty, students will have the opportunity to collaborate in research projects in one of the many labs on campus.
