Shifting Mindsets to Shelter English and Content Instruction
Yields third-course credit.
A hybrid professional development course that extends learning from RETELL by deepening your understanding of the language you use every day in your teaching. You will practice and apply methods for planning, instruction, assessment, and reflection to identify some “best practices” for future SEI. Course completion earns participants 15 PDPs with an option to earn 30 additional PDPs and 1 graduate credit from Brandeis Graduate Professional Studies.
Participants will learn to:
Analyze, apply, and reflect upon High Leverage Principles for Teaching and Learning with English Learners.
Identify language demand of teaching materials, language and tasks as well as
expectations for student output in a given lesson.
Use RETELL and other SEI strategies to scaffold language English Language
Use academic language tools to facilitate productive student discussions.
Apply a “can do” attitude toward working with ELLs by leveraging strengths to address weaknesses.
Assess BOTH language and content development with criteria for success, rubrics, and methods for delivering feedback.
Annotate, use, evaluate and share resources with colleagues.
Develop systems, routines and strategies to sustain new learnings from this course within your teaching year and career.
Observe peers and deliver feedback to foster new “mindsets” toward all aspects of SEI and working with ELLs.
