Commencement FAQ

How many times a year is Commencement held?

Commencement, including the Rabb School mini-commencement ceremony, is held just once a year, typically mid- to late May.

If I graduate in February or August, may I still attend Commencement?

All February and August graduates are invited to attend Commencement activities in May. By the end of February, all graduates and potential May graduates will receive details about the ceremony. [top]

If I am a February or August graduate, when will I receive my master's degree/graduate certificate?

February graduates may expect to receive master's degrees and/or graduate certificates by March, and August graduates may expect to receive master's degrees and/or graduate certificates by the end of September. [top]

Where will my master's degree and/or graduate certificate be mailed?

Degrees and certificates are mailed to the address students provide on their application to graduate form. If no address is provided, the documents are mailed to the student's permanent address. Please contact the GPS office if your mailing address changes so that we may update our records. [top]

Do I have to pay for my cap and gown?

No, all administrative fees associated with graduation and Commencement are included in the $100 application-to-graduate fee. [top]

Do I have to return my cap and gown?

The cap and gown is yours to keep after Commencement. [top]

What is a mini-commencement?

While Brandeis holds a formal commencement ceremony for all students, each department and school at the university holds a mini-commencement honoring graduates in their designated program. It is at these mini-commencements where graduates are recognized individually. Mini-commencement times and locations are arranged well in advance. [top]

At which ceremony will I receive my master's degree/graduate certificate?

August and February graduates will receive their master's degrees and/or graduate certificates in the mail. May graduates will receive their master's degrees and/or graduate certificates at the Rabb School mini-commencement. [top]

Why should I attend the main Brandeis Commencement ceremony?

Though not required, the main Commencement is an enjoyable and memorable event for students and their families. Graduates are recognized with their peers, honorary degrees are awarded and a notable speaker addresses the graduates. [top]

How many guests may I bring to each ceremony?

Each graduate is allotted up to six tickets for the main Commencement ceremony. The Division of Graduate Professional Studies allots three to four tickets for the Rabb School mini-commencement, depending upon the number of graduates. [top]

I am a May graduate and will not be attending Commencement. When will I receive my master's degree/graduate certificate?

May graduates not attending Commencement will be mailed their master's degrees and/or graduate certificates shortly after Commencement. [top]

Are academic honors issued to Graduate Professional Studies graduates?

Academic honors are not awarded to GPS graduates. [top]
