Brandeisians racked up 10 nominations for the prestigious Boston theater awards

Brandeis University Theater Arts faculty and alumni have tallied 10 nominations for 2016 Elliot Norton Awards, the highest honor in theater in the Boston area.

Leading the way are Adrianne Krstansky, the Barbara Sherman '54 and Malcolm L. Sherman Director of Theater Arts, and associate professor of the practice of theater arts Robert Walsh, who each received multiple nominations. Walsh, who is also the artistic director of the Gloucester Stage Company, was nominated for outstanding actor in a small company production for his performance in Gloucester Stage’s “Gloucester Blue;” and outstanding director in a small company production for “New Electric Ballroom.”

Krstansky received nominations for outstanding actress in a large company for her performance in Huntington Theater Company’s “Come Back Little Sheba” and outstanding actress in a mid-size company for New Repertory Theater’s “Blackberry Winter.” Krstansky was also included in two outstanding ensemble nominations, “Come Back Little Sheba” and “New Electric Ballroom.”

Named after the acclaimed Boston theater critic, the Elliot Norton Awards are overseen by the Boston Theater Critics Association. The winners will be announced in a ceremony on May 23 at the Shubert Theatre in Boston. The following alumni and faculty have received nominations:

Johnnie McQuarley, MFA’11 — “Othello” — Actors’ Shakespeare Project

Outstanding Actress: Mid-size Company
Adrianne Krstansky — “Blackberry Winter” — New Repertory Theater

Outstanding Actor: Small Company
Brandon Green, MFA’14 — “The Octoroon” — Company One Theater
Robert Walsh — “Gloucester Blue” — Gloucester Stage Company

Outstanding Director: Small Company
Robert Walsh — “New Electric Ballroom” — Gloucester Stage Company

Along with Elliot Norton Awards nominations, theater arts faculty and alumni were also recently honored with Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Awards, which were announced in April. The following faculty and alumni were named award winners:
