Creating Art, Promoting Change: Works by Jewish Women - Traveling Exhibition

Exhibit side A

Exhibit side B

Creating Art, Promoting Change: Works by Jewish Women - The Exhibit is the newest traveling exhibit to be produced by the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute. Complemented in style and content by the weekly planner of the same name, the traveling exhibition features 13 Jewish women artists who have taken deliberate actions to bring about a positive social and/or political change.

Creating Art, Promoting Change: Works by Jewish Women - The Exhibit is a double-sided six panel traveling exhibit that highlights 13 Jewish international women artists who are activists. The exhibit is a unique way to promote social justice through the arts.  Creating Art, Promoting Change: Works by Jewish Women - The Exhibit highlights groundbreaking artists, such as Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro, founders of the feminist art movement; Israeli artist, Ayana Friedman and her powerful piece, Aguna (1996) which encompasses concerns surrounding the controversial issue of women’s divorce rights under Jewish law); and Mierle Laderman Ukeles who launched the environmental art movement in 1977 by becoming the first ever artist-in-residence at the Department of Sanitation in New York City.

Each panel, measuring seven feet in height, features beautifully replicated large color photos of the artwork of one or two significant activist artists accompanied by an informative description about her and her work. The panels are easily assembled, completely portable and can be adjusted to easily fit into a variety of spaces.

As founding director of the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute Shulamit Reinharz commented,
“… something amazing is happening. Freed at last – for the most part – from their restrictive image and limited opportunities, Jewish women have embraced the world of art. And many have done so in the service of social justice.”

The Creating Art, Promoting Change exhibit is available to travel for periods of one weekend to upwards of three weeks; pricing will vary with the desired length of the stay. Feel free to e-mail the HBI (hbi@brandeis.edu /ph: 781.736.2064) with any questions on availability, costs, promotion, and additional materials involving the Creating Art, Promoting Change project.

Check out Hadassah-Brandeis Institute Director of Communications, Lindsey Fieldman and Communications Coordinator, Rosalind Landman as they give a brief tour of the exhibit!
