Lenore Weitzman, an author and Hadassah-Brandeis Institute Scholar-in-Residence, discussed the work of the kashariyot, women who helped Jews in ghettos during the Holocaust, and the role that their gender has played in their disappearance from history. For the past 12 years, Weitzman has been researching the relationship between gender and the Holocaust. She found that the acts of the kashariyot, which means "couriers" in Hebrew, have been virtually ignored by post-war historians despite the fact that they were significant contributors to the Jewish resistance in the era when Eastern Europe was occupied by Nazis.

A research arm of Brandeis University on Wednesday launched a new Internet magazine for Jewish women.The magazine, called 614, will be published bi-monthly in an effort to spark conversation among “a new audience of often disillusioned Jewish women in their 20s, 30s and 40s,” according to a press release from the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute.Among the topics covered are the ethics of women selling their eggs and the significance of Jewish names.The magazine’s title, a play on the 613 mitzvot in the Torah, is meant to suggest that Judaism always leaves room for innovation.
