
Dr. Lisa Fishbayn Project Director
Dr. Fishbayn did her initial legal training in Canada and clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada. She received her doctorate in law from Harvard Law School. She was lecturer in laws at University College London, where she developed courses in feminist legal theory, comparative family law and the philosophy of multiculturalism. She is the author of articles on gender and culture conflicts in family law in South Africa, Britain, Canada and Israel and is currently writing a book on the role of law in fostering transformative dialogue to improve the position of women under Jewish family law. She was a member of the Gender Expert Group of advisers to the Commonwealth Secretariat in the United Kingdom.
Sylvia Neil Founder and Chair
Ms. Neil is the founder of the Project. She is an adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law focusing on religion, law and politics and currently serves on the board of trustees and executive committees of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Columbia College Chicago, the national advisory committee of Human Rights Watch Women's Rights Division, Womenoncall.org and other civic endeavors. She formerly served as associate dean of the University of Chicago Law School, regional executive director and legal counsel of the American Jewish Congress and human rights commissioner for both the state and the county. She has developed programmatic initiatives, litigated and appeared amicus curiae, authored legislative enactments and testified before legislative bodies on issues relating to religious liberty, women's rights, poverty law and the Mideast. Ms. Neil has written and taught courses on religious liberty, gender, jurisprudence and legal writing. She received her JD cum laude from Northwestern, MA in religious studies from the University of Chicago and BA with high distinction from the University of Michigan.
Professor Shulamit Reinharz Director of the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute
Professor Reinharz has an impressive record of transforming innovative ideas into institutional realities. While director of Brandeis’ Women’s Studies Program, she founded its graduate program, the first graduate program in Jewish Women’s Studies in the world , and the Brandeis Women’s Studies Research Center. Founding director of the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute, Professor Reinharz is the author of many books and articles, including The JGirls Guide and American Jewish Women and the Zionist Enterprise.
