Meet the Staff
Michael J. LaFarr, PsyD, is the Executive Director of Health and Wellness and oversees the Health Center and the Psychological Counseling Center. He earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology and a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Denver. He specializes in treating anxiety disorders, depressive disorders and functional pain. He has advanced training in treating people of color, GLBT individuals, and other marginalized populations. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors.
Debra Poaster, MD has been the Medical Director of the Brandeis Health Center since 1998. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and Tufts University Medical School of Medicine and completed her residency in internal medicine at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Boston. She is board certified in internal medicine. Debra has worked in a variety of health care settings including Harvard University Health Services, Fenway Community Health Center, and the Suffolk County Jail.
Phyllis Selter, MD has worked as a Pediatrician at Brandeis and a community health center for 32 years. She is board certified in Pediatrics, having attended SUNY Downstate Medical School. She completed a pediatric residency at the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY and an Adolescent Medical Fellowship at The Children's Hospital in Boston. Areas of interest include "teaching moments", empowering patients, and the interface between physical and emotional components of illness.
Our Nurse Practitioners
Diana Denning, MSN, MPH, WHNP is the Nurse Manager/Administrative Director at Brandeis Health Center. She is a certified Women's Health Nurse Practitioner with a focus on sexual and reproductive health. She has a background in both clinical and public health, bringing these perspectives to her work of optimizing the health of the Brandeis community.
Sioban McLaughlin, MS, APRN, BC joined the Health Center staff in 1998. She has a Masters Degree from Northeastern University with certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner. She has worked in intensive care units, emergency rooms, outpatient clinics, and has been working in college health since 1994. Her primary areas of interest are women's health, and health education.
Sheryl Kelleher, MSN, FNP-C, a family nurse practitioner, comes to the Health Center with experience in urgent care dating back to 2000. She enjoys working with students to optimize their health. When not working at Brandeis she spends time with her busy family.
Tobey Fidler, RN, BSN, has worked at the Health Center since 1983. She is a graduate of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and Rhode Island College. Tobey recognizes that many students are on their own, away from home and parents for the first time. She enjoys seeing students grow into confident young adults over their time here at Brandeis.
Val Bayley RN, BSN, joined the Health Center in 2009. After graduating from Boston University in 1978, she worked at Mass General Hospital in a variety of settings.
Carolyn Butterworth, MS, RD, CNSD is the nutritionist at Brandeis Health Center. She is a graduate of Northeastern and UNH with specialty in sports nutrition, food allergies, GI nutrition, and eating disorders. She has a wealth of experience in college and pediatric nutrition.
Our Support Staff
Anna Porter is the Lead Practice Assistant and has been at Brandeis since 2001. She attended Bunker Hill Community College , Middlesex Community College and Northeastern University. For nearly 17 years she has held various clinical and clerical positions in health care. As the lead receptionist and medical records coordinator, Anna is interested in optimizing systems and your experience at Brandeis Health Center. When not at work she can often be found dining out with her family and exploring culinary opportunities.
Marge Doyle has provided administrative support at the Health Center since 2004. Prior to this position she she worked in Student Life and Student Activities. Marge assists students with scheduling appointments and provides information about Health Center services.
