External Funding Resources
Below is a sample of some of the external funding awards you may be able to find - the list is not exhaustive and new opportunities will be added as we learn of them.
Abroad
- Laura W. Bush Traveling Fellowship is intended for American college/university students who express an interest in international collaboration but as of yet had not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad. The length of time for the travel is expected to be between 4 and 6 weeks and should include interaction with individuals from other nations.

IIPP Fellows Program offers an unique combination of short seven-week summer global policy institutes: a unique study abroad program focusing on global public policy, service and research; and a pro-active and culturally sensitive approach to minority education that fosters international service and non-profit sector leadership provides IIPP with the means to meet the needs of its diverse students - and help them succeed.
For students of color
- Sponsors for Educational Opportunity and Inroads offer summer internship stipends to students of color.
Journalism
- The American Copy Editors Society awards several scholarships each year, including the $2,500 Aubespin Scholarship.
- Collegiate Broadcasters, Inc maintains a database of stipends, fellowships, and internship opportunities in many branches of journalism. The oppportunities through this website are available in different times of the year, so we encourage you to check their resources often.
- Eric Breindel Memorial Foundation offers winners a cash prize of $10,000, as well as a paid internship of his or her choice at either Fox News Channel, The Wall Street Journal, or the New York Post.
- Since 1990, The Association of Women in Sports Media has placed about 100 female college students interested in sports media careers in paid internships with employers such as Sports Illustrated, ESPN, USA Track & Field and some of the country’s most respected daily newspapers. All interns receive a $1,000 scholarship from AWSM in addition to whatever pay the internship provides. Copy editing interns receive an additional $1,000 scholarship from the Associated Press Sports Editors. All interns also receive $300 toward travel expenses to the annual AWSM convention, waived convention registration fees and free lodging at the host hotel. Former AWSM interns now work at top media organizations such as The Associated Press, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, The Washington Post and ESPN.
Public Service
- The Samuel Huntington Public Service Award provides an annual stipend of $10,000 for a graduating college senior to pursue public service anywhere in the world. This allows recipients to engage in a meaningful public service activity for one year before proceeding on to graduate school or a career.
- The J. W. Saxe Memorial Fund is a prize of two thousand dollars will be awarded to one or more college or university students involved in public service. The award is meant to enable the student to gain practical experience in public service by taking a no-pay or low-pay job or internship during a summer or other term. Preference will be given applicants who have already found such a position, but who require additional funds.
- The Northwest Institute for Social Change hosts 12 students each summer - on a full-ride scholarship - for a unique academic and hands-on program that teaches how media tools can affect public policy. A combination of liberal-arts styled coursework and practical hands-on projects, students attend courses and then produce a series of audio and video documentaries about social and political issues. Working with National Public Radio correspondents and with Academy Award nominated producers, student learn journalist and artistic skills to produce engaging documentaries.
Health Policy
- The Wellstone Fellowship is a unique opportunity for a graduating senior to foster the advancement of social justice through participation in health care advocacy work that focuses on the unique challenges facing communities of color. Through this fellowship, Families USA hopes to expand the pool of talented social justice advocates from underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups, particularly from the Black/African American, Latino, and American Indian communities.
- The Villers Fellowship for Health Care Justice operates out of Families USA's health policy department and assist sthe organization's efforts to improve access to health coverage for all Americans, especially for low-income and other vulnerable communities. Like the Wellstone Fellowship, this is a year-long, full-time, salaried positions at Families USA's office in Washington, DC.
