The Hiatt Shadowing Experience & Alumni Networking is an opportunity for students to develop career-related knowledge, skills, and values from direct experience.
It is also an opportunity for you to mentor a student, re-connect with Brandeis and see your professional experience in a new light.
During the experience, students visit and interact with you during one workday. This interaction can take many forms, including a full- or half-day of shadowing, or a lunch meeting followed by a tour of your facilities.
Students reflect on their academic and experiential learning through the lens of the shadowing experience and start making decisions around their own professional futures.
The Shadowing Experience can fall into two categories: exploration and confirmation.
- Exploration allows students to "sample" their career interests and determine whether they are a good fit.
- Once confident in their choice, students utilize confirmation methods to uncover industry-specific details and receive job leads.
Program Expectations
Although we hope you will stay in touch with your student match after the initial visit, the Shadowing Experience is a one-time commitment. Volunteer your time for at least half a day when a student can observe you working and ask questions. We would still like to connect you with a student even if you can only do a networking meeting.
If your work environment is not conducive to a shadowing experience, you can still be helpful to our students through other networking opportunities.

- Allow a student to sit in on your meetings, appointments and conversations.
- Discuss your career path.
- Offer career advice for the student.
- Allow a student to meet with your colleagues.

Timeline
The Hiatt Shadowing Experience takes place during January and June when the students are on break. In order to successfully match students for the experience, you will be asked to confirm your participation by October or March, depending on the cycle. Students sign up and then go through a pre-departure workshop, where they receive their match.
