Hiatt’s World-of-Work (WOW) program provides students with $3500 stipends to pursue unpaid summer internships. This year, 30 WOWs will be awarded to students involved with organizations that promote and address issues of social justice. Learn about the steps and strategies to preparing a successful WOW application so you can maximize the resources available to support your own social justice mission.

Social Justice in American Healthcare: Opportunities to Serve the Underserved

Interested in combining medicine and social justice? Join us in learning about underserved populations in the American healthcare system. Panelists will include Brandeis students and alumni, including those who have worked with individuals with disabilities, individuals with HIV, individuals living in poverty, and more. Invited panelists include:
- Stacey Ha '12: World of Work recipient and former intern at Gifted Hands, a nonprofit organization that provides outreach to New York City's underserved communities through art programs, during the past two summers. As a part of her internship, she taught art to patients with HIV and cancer living in impoverished areas of New York City and organized gallery exhibitions showcasing their finished art pieces.
- Emily Krainer '12: Former intern at the pediatric neurology department at Columbia Medical Center. Through her experience, she had the opportunity to meet and work with many children with disabilities and their families.
- Vanessa McClinchy: Principal and sole proprietor of Vanessa McClinchy Consulting, leveraging ‘the power of Human Connection’ in Service. She also designs and delivers diversity programs for large organizations such as Mass General Hospital and established the first team of medical translators for New England’s largest HMO, while continuing to work full time managing a critical care unit and attending graduate school at night.
- Dimple Patel '12: Former intern at Native American Cancer Research, a nonprofit organization that works to help reduce cancer incidence and mortality in Native Americans.
- Samantha Eisenstein Watson '01, MBA '06: Professor at Brandeis University (Sociology of Disability) and founder of the SAMFund, an organization developed in the spring of 2003 to benefit young cancer survivors, who are left with a lack of support (financially and emotionally) for their transition into post-treatment life.

Please join us for a showing of Waiting for Superman, the award-winning 2010 documentary film from director Davis Guggenheim and producer Lesley Chilcott. The film analyzes the failures of American public education by following several students through the educational system, hoping to be selected in a lottery for acceptance into charter schools. Following the film, a panel of experts representing different facets of education will lead a dialogue about the state of education in this country and how young people can be active in addressing the current issues. Snacks will be provided.
