How Hiatt Can Help: Student Perspectives

Jesse Grittner '02

Major: Computer Science

I had so many questions going into the law school admissions process that I wasn't really sure where to begin. The LSAT, LSDAS, letters of recommendation, the personal statement, preparing applications, choosing schools that would be right for me -- all of these factors, and more, are crucial to every applicant's success. Barb was always there to let me vent, to make suggestions, and to help me navigate through this long and confusing process. Her advice and her upbeat attitude has made me a better, more confident applicant. I've been accepted at some of my top choices, including Harvard and Stanford, and I have no doubt that I have Hiatt to thank for some of my success.

Applying to law school wasn't exactly a tea party, but the Hiatt Career Center made the process much less traumatic. Before my first appointment with Barb Garpow, the pre-law advisor, I had no idea what to do with the stack of applications on my desk. Barb walked me through the whole process, answering questions on everything from how to go about asking for a recommendation to how to write a personal statement, to what order my extracurricular activities should be listed in. Either by appointment or by e-mail, every question I had about the applications was taken care of. Thanks to the guidance I received from Barb and the Hiatt Career Center, my applications were all in the mail by early November, and I could relax knowing that everything had been done well.

The Hiatt Center took me from ignorance to expertise in the law school application process. At the time of my first visit, I was essentially clueless about all of the elements required to complete the application process. Since that first visit, Barbara has taken me step by step, offering both assistance and advice. Whether doing something as simple as forwarding transcripts or as elaborate as preparing for the LSAT, I could always find immediate help in Hiatt. Without Barbara's guidance, turning my law school goals into reality would have been immeasurably more difficult. Best of all, she's almost always available, and always with a smile.

If you are a Brandeis student or alumnus/a, you can e-mail your question to a pre-law advisor. Please include your e-mail address in the text of your message.
