Shadowing Experience: FAQ
What does the Experience entail?
This is a chance for you to network with Brandeis alumni and get valuable information about a profession you think might interest you. The experience is only ONE appointment, but your relationship with the Shadowing Contact can and should continue in form of a mentorship.

Is there a job or internship connected to this? Do I get paid?
You will not get paid for the experience, nor will you immediately land a job or an internship - the Contacts are volunteering their time and expertise to give you valuable ADVICE. While you CANNOT outright ask for a job or an internship, many of our students have received offers through their networks.
What can I do during my application to get the best match?
Please know that Hiatt cannot guarantee that we will find you a direct match, as we are limited by the number of Shadowing Contacts per industry and location. Be open about your flexibility and limitations during your interview. Make sure that your resume is stellar even prior to applying, and that you follow directions very closely.
How do I get in touch with my Shadowing Contact?
Hiatt will provide you with appropriate contact information during your matching process. When communicating with your Contact, please remember that you representing both yourself and Brandeis University as a whole.
What kind of research do I need to do?
After you are accepted into the Shadowing Experience, you need to do some research on the industry and the company of your Shadowing Contact. Consider these Topics: What is your interest in this field? What are you hoping to learn? Please list 6-10 questions you would like to ask your Shadowing Contact. Use TypeFocus and Vault (accessible through JAMIN) as resources.
Important: Please do not ask your Contact questions that are easily searchable on the Internet.
Additionally, research the company’s location and plan your transportation route. Talk to your family in advance if you will require assistance.

How should I dress during my Shadowing Experience?
Since you will be interacting with professionals in the field, you should dress accordingly. Consider what you would wear to a professional interview. You probably don’t require a suit, but think of a shirt and tie or top with skirt/slacks combinations. Wear closed-toe shoes with appropriate socks. Shave if needed.
