Finance Resume

If you have not worked with a Hiatt counselor before, we strongly recommend that you make an appointment. As you will see below, finance resume needs to follow specific guidelines in order to be considered for applications.

What your resume needs to show:

  • Relevant experiences - build this section by joining campus clubs and by working for smaller firms before moving on to bigger companies.
  • Excellent presentation - every aspect of your resume must be consistent and must shine. Work with Hiatt counselors to create the best presentation possible.
  • Relatively high GPA, particularly for prestigious institutions.
  • Relevant coursework in Economics and Business (upper-level classes)

Writing effective finance resumes

It is difficult to land a job in consulting or finance, and the first step to navigating the competitive hiring process is submitting a compelling resume.  To ensure that your resume is included in this collection and that you have a good chance of being granted an interview, we strongly recommend that you take time to edit your resume before submitting it.   Here are some tips to consider when writing or editing a consulting or finance resume:

  • Tailor your resume to the opportunity.  Consider the position for which you are applying and modify your resume to highlight skills applicable to your chosen field.  If you’re not sure what skills the field requires, research the position more to learn about what to include.  If both consulting and finance positions interest you, include information that would be relevant to both since you will only be submitting one resume to this collection.  See the Industry page  to learn more about skills that employers are looking for in each field.
  • Neatness counts.  Make sure your resume makes the cleanest, most professional appearance possible.  A resume submitted for the Resume Book should be clearly and conservatively formatted, concise, and easy to follow.  Think Wall Street Journal.
  • Emphasize your accomplishments.  A well-written resume will entice an employer to invite you for an interview.  Write bullet points that begin with strong action verbs and describe your accomplishments, quantifying wherever possible.  Consulting and finance employers want to know what you have accomplished in terms that they can understand – percentages, dollar amounts, and numbers.  If you need assistance with this process, check out the links below for information on how to do this.
  • Submit a flawless resume. Consulting and finance employers want to hire detail-oriented professionals; to increase your chances of getting an interview, ensure that your resume presents this image.   Read and re-read your resume before submitting it to the collection.  Get someone else to look over it and ensure that it has a consistent format throughout and is error-free.
  • In addition to keeping these tips in mind, use information from vault.com, such as the Vault Guide to Resumes, Cover Letters, and Interviews. Attend Hiatt's Finance Resume Workshops or schedule an individual appointment with a Hiatt counselor.
