Student Testimonials

"I have learned a lot from both of my experiences shadowing Brandeis alumni. I attended conference calls, board meetings, seminars and was even offered an internship over winter break at the Broadway League. Without a doubt, the shadowing program has broadened my career network."

"This job shadowing experience is definitely a good idea. I learned a lot, I formed connections, was introduced to surgeons and had the opportunity to speak to them and other medical school students who are preparing to be surgeons."

Student Testimonials

"I met with my Sponsor at his place of work in the hospital and was able to shadow him as he saw patients. It was a great experience as I am interested in pursuing a career in psychiatry, which is his field of specialty. This was my first experience working in that sort of hospital setting and definitely helped me gain a better understanding of the role of a psychiatrist."

"My Sponsor helped me discuss the museum studies field. She was knowledgeable, helpful and engaged, and provided suggestions and pointers. She even gave me three contacts to further my networking with curators. I enjoyed the informality of the setting, her relaxed demeanor, and the expertise she shared."

Student Testimonials

"I had a great experience working with my Sponsor at Tufts New England Medical Center. Observing her interactions with patients and her residents gave me great insight into the skills a successful doctor should possess. Dr. Norden was helpful and friendly and had great things to say about Brandeis university. I am very glad that I participated in this program."

"My experience has been a great one. Before shadowing, my sponsor met with me to discuss the finance industry and explain to me some basic aspects of it. He also gave me reading materials to help me absorb the information. He then met with me in his office on a Saturday to show me what he does and gave me a tour of the office. He put a tremendous amount of time and effort into helping me and I couldn't have asked for a better match."

Overview

Deadline for Student Applications: November 6, 2009.

The Experience will take place during one day in January 2010.

Hiatt Shadowing Experience & Alumni Networking is an opportunity for you to visit an alumnus/a or a friend of the University and develop career-related knowledge, skills, and values from direct experience.

During the Experience, you will visit your Shadowing Sponsor in a professional setting and interact with him/her during a portion of one workday.

This is a chance for you to network with Brandeis alumni and get valuable information about a profession that might interest you.  The experience is only ONE appointment, but your relationship with your Shadowing Sponsor can and should continue in the form of a mentorship.

You can apply to the Shadowing Experience at any point in your Brandeis career, and as many times as you wish.

This is NOT a paid experience, you should NOT expect a job or an internship to materialize at the end, NOR should you ask for an opportunity directly. Instead, our alumni are volunteering their knowledge and expertise to help you learn the ins and outs of a particular field.

Learning Outcomes

  • Exploration allows you to "sample" your career interests and determine whether they are a good fit.
  • Once confident in your choice, you will utilize Confirmation methods to uncover industry-specific details and receive job leads.
  • Learn more about Shadowing Learning Outcomes here.
