BIMA offers promising actors an experience above and beyond traditional theater programs. As you refine your technique and develop your creative skills, you and your fellow actors will work closely with a talented faculty and guest artists to form an ensemble that creates original, collaborative, theatrical works.

The theater major includes three main elements:

  • Technique classes
  • Special workshops
  • Development and rehearsal of an original theatrical work
Technique classes include a thorough physical and vocal warm-up, followed by exercises that use a mix of standard American acting training and physical training to teach fundamental acting skills. As with all arts, even the most advanced acting students return to fundamentals to improve their craft; you will focus on character development, scene work, voice, movement and other core techniques.

Throughout the month, you will participate in special workshops with guest artists. In the past, special workshops have focused on dance, costume design, environmental theater, mask, acrobatics, puppeteering, and street theater.

Each summer, the theater students work together to create an original, collaborative work. You and your peers will explore a question or theme; then together you will create a performance based on your interpretations and personal experience.

You will also have opportunities to attend world-class theater performances in Boston and in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.
