Visual Arts

As a BIMA visual artist, you will join with your peers and arts faculty to create a vibrant studio community in the Brandeis fine arts studios. You will be encouraged to experiment as you develop your technical and creative skills with guidance from professional artists.

Throughout the summer, you will work in a variety of two- and three-dimensional media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and mixed media. Directed assignments and open ended questions invite you to test new ideas and techniques, and to develop your visual vocabulary. You will create a number of individual pieces to add to your portfolio, including a self-directed final project. You will also have opportunities to work with your peers to create collaborative projects and installations.

Ongoing group critiques will help you develop the skills to respond to others' work, and challenge you to question and refine your own style and artistic statements. You will also be exposed to the work of professional artists, the history of art, and the language of contemporary art.

The rich cultural and natural environment of New England provides an inspiring backdrop for the program. Art viewing opportunities range from the world-renowned collection at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts to the cutting edge contemporary art at MASS MoCA in the Berkshires.
