Alternative Commuting Information
Carpool/Vanpool
There are many reasons to consider alternative forms of transportation for your commute to Brandeis environmental concerns,
fuel conservation, and cost savings, to name a few. Two alternative methods to consider are a carpool or a vanpool. Brandeis
University has allied with MassRides to make these commute options easier. MassRides maintains a database of commuters who
are exploring a carpool or vanpool option. The system automatically matches up commuters (either here at Brandeis or at other
businesses in Waltham) based on several factors scheduled hours in the workday, where commuters live, etc. There is no
obligation to join a carpool or vanpool merely by signing up in the database. Once you are matched up with other commuters
you have the option to pursue a commuting relationship with them or not. For more information and to enter the database please
go to www.commute.com; or call 1-888-4COMMUTE.
Commuting by Bicycle
Riding a bicycle to work is a great way to exercise, save money, and help the environment. Brandeis encourages bicycle commuting with conveniently-placed bike racks around campus, and showers available at the Gosman Sports Center. The University also offers the following tips to bikers:
- Bike racks are located around campus to securely park bicycles. To prevent theft, employees and students should purchase a lock for their bicycle. Lock your bike every time you leave it, no matter where you are on campus or how long you intend to leave it. Use a U-bolt style bike lock. They are the most effective.
- Safety FIRST! Be safe; learn the route and how traffic flows (on and off campus). Pick routes that are safest when encountering motor vehicles.
- Arrive early on the first day of your bike commute to ensure that you arrive on time.
- Wear a helmet and you can reduce your risk of head injury by 85%.
- Remember that pedestrians always have the right of way.
