Debating America's Place in the World
In the late 1990s, America's global economic leadership seemed unassailable - the product of vibrant growth, a winnning business model and a desired lifestyle.
Today this leadership can no longer be taken for granted. The excesses of the 1990s and scandals in leading companies have tarnished the American business model. Our political and military initiatives are widely criticized, and our trade policies are increasingly viewed as inconsistent with global liberalization. Growing budget and trade deficits further complicate the picture.
Do these developments constitute real threats to America's economic leadership and to effective mechanisms of global governance? Will international political tensions undermine American business at home and abroad, and slow the development of international trade and investment? What steps should the United States and its business, academic and civic institutions take to revitalize America's image and role?
A Major Symposium Sponsored by IBS' Rosenberg Institute
These issues will be debated at a major symposium on November 13 and 14 entitled "Winning Back the World: America's New Challenges in the Global Economy". The symposium will be the second sponsored by the Rosenberg Institute of Global Finance, IBS's principal research platform in the field of international finance.
Douglas Daft, Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, will be the symposium's keynote speaker. International business leaders and faculty will also participate in panel discussions further exploring this provocative topic. Please see below for the program schedule (provisional as at 24 October).
The keynote address and panel discussions on the first day will be held in IBS's Sachar International Center; the panels on the second day in the newly opened Lemberg Academic Center.
