Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Internship Program
Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program Accepting Applications!
Brandeis University has been fortunate enough to be named as the host organization for the Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program.
Through the Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership program, we hope to inspire and support a new generation of leaders to commit to a lifetime of contributing to the common good, and to elevate and highlight service and citizen leadership as central strategies that are critical to the health and well-being of our democracy.
The goals of the program are:
- to encourage emerging leaders to engage in a lifetime of citizen service;
- to serve as a platform to promote service and citizen leadership;
- and to commemorate and honor the extraordinary contributions of Eli J. Segal.
The 42nd president of the United States visited Brandeis on December 3rd to deliver the inaugural lecture for the Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program. All three aspects of the Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program are exciting!
- a lecture series of high profile speakers;
- a network of Segal Fellows providing access to Eli’s friends and family as mentors and networking resources;
- an internship program at Brandeis University and the Heller School for Social Policy and Management.
The third leg of the program is the development of the internship (fellowship) program at Brandeis which will begin this summer when we anticipate awarding Segal fellowships to 5 Brandeis students. This number will triple in subsequent years, and the Network will kick into full gear, as full annual funding is achieved through the endowment created by the family and friends of Eli Segal.
Stipends of $5000 for graduate students and $3500 for Brandeis undergraduates will be awarded and will support five students (two students from Heller and three Brandeis undergraduates) pursuing meaningful summer internships at organizations that are committed to working for the common good and exemplify the characteristics of citizen leadership, public and community service, civic engagement, and social entrepreneurship.
Host sites may be in any sector ranging from health care to youth development to the environment to education and any activity in between. The common link is service and leadership for the common good. In the first year of the program (Summer 2008) a limited number of Internship site locations have been pre-selected.
We are pleased to announce that the Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program is now taking applications for the internships for summer 2008. Application packets are in PDF format and are due by 5pm on Monday, February 11, 2008.
