Top 6 Reasons to Connect with ISSO Staff
(In no particular order...)
We talk about your visa status! And we talk about visa regulations, immigration policies and employment authorization a lot! It is up to you to maintain your legal status, but we will do all that we can to assist you. Remember to READ the ISSOnews, the fabulous electronic newsletter sent by the ISSO. This is how you will receive the information you need throughout your time at Brandeis as an international student. Follow us on Facebook too!
We match people up!No, not a dating service! Emily Stewart, Department Coordinator of ISSO, coordinates the Open Doors Host Program for Undergraduate International Students and the Thanksgiving Holiday Host Program. For more information, please see the Host Programs information.
We help you settle in!We hope our office can help you settle in and feel more at home! If you are facing other types of issues such as academic, health or personal issues, we can connect you with resources and other offices on campus that can help you as well.
We help you work in the U.S. legally! The ISSO hosts several employment workshops each semester to explain the types of authorizations available to visa holders. At orientation we will review on-campus and off-campus opportunities and limitations, Social Security Numbers, U.S. taxes, and all the many details connected to working in the U.S. legally.
We serve free food!Well, this is sometimes true. The ISSO sponsors events each semester and often that means we have food! We host dinners, holiday theme parties, and special events such as sampling traditional pies at Thanksgiving time and ice-cream socials during study breaks. We always welcome suggestions for events. We also arrange trips throughout the year so that you can see more of New England and experience the culture. In past trips we have ventured to Portsmouth's Strawberry Banke and Newport's Mansions. During the holidays we arrange to see The Nutcracker performed by the Boston Ballet in downtown Boston.
We help you get back into the United States! The ISSO provides formal letters and signs official documents including: the required travel signatures on visa documents; invitation letters so that family members can apply for visas to visit you; and letters that help students defer military service at home.
