Automated Teller Machines (ATMs)
ATMs allow you to conduct financial transactions such as cash withdrawals, deposits, and transfers without physically going to your bank. You should examine the availability of ATMs (and the costs of using ATMs) when choosing a bank. There are ATMs on campus for your convenience.
Debit/ Bank Cards
Bank Cards usually come free with your savings or checking account and allow you to use ATMs to access your account. Some bank cards, like credit cards, allow you to make purchases directly at restaurants and shops. The difference from a credit card is that the amount spent on purchases made with a bank card is immediately deducted from your account; you cannot spend more than what you have.
A credit card bill is sent to you every month. You are expected to make a minimum monthly payment by a specified date each month. If you do not pay the full amount, the unpaid balance will be subject to a “finance charge” which is often quite high. You may also have to pay an annual fee to maintain your card. One company that offers credit cards to international students is American Express. For more information you can log on to http://www.americanexpress.com/.
