Alert: Scam targeting international students and scholars! Please be aware!
A very sophisticated scam has surfaced in the eastern United States targeting international students. Students are receiving terrifying phone calls from someone claiming to be from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services/Department of Homeland Security (USCIS/USDHS). The caller has a matched USCIS toll-free number and may provide you with your own personal information such as birth-date, passport number, I-94 number, etc. The caller may claim that on a recent trip abroad, you may not have filled out your I-94 card properly, or, USCIS caught an error on your pending OPT application. The caller might also state that you need to take action to fix the situation and pay a some of money or you will be deported. This is completely false and is a scam.
If anyone calls you and states that they are from USCIS, please stay calm and try to get specific information such as: time of call, where call came from, phone number if you have caller-id, name of officer if provided, and all details of conversation. It is then very important that you contact the ISSO immediately.
Please do not contact USCIS on your own. The ISSO will call USCIS for you or help you make the phone call in the office.
Any Paid and Unpaid Work Off-Campus Needs Work Authorization First Through the ISSO
We have been getting questions lately regarding work authorization to pursue an internship or job off campus. To clarify, please be advised that ALL work activity (paid or not paid) needs authorization from the ISSO BEFORE you start working.
For J-1 students the employment authorization is called Academic Training (AT).
For students on a visa other than F-1 or J-1, please contact the ISSO for guidance on employment authorization options.
General employment authorization information is available on the ISSO website: http://www.brandeis.edu/acserv/isso/current/employment/index.html.
Please contact the ISSO (email@example.com) if you have any questions.
