Margarethe von Trotta ranks among the most important female directors in German cinema since the 1970s, during which time she also made a name for herself as an actress. Today, primarily active as a director and screenwriter, her most well-known films include: Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum (The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum,1975, in co-direction with Volker Schlöndorff), Die Bleierne Zeit (Marianne and Juliane, 1981), Rosa Luxemburg (1985), Das Versprechen (The Promise, 1994), and Rosenstraße (The Women of Rosenstrasse, 2003), among others. Von Trotta gained national and international recognition, being nominated for and awarded with several film prizes like the German Film Award, the Golden Berlin Bear (Berlin International Film Festival), the Golden Lion (Venice Film Festival) and the Golden Palm (Cannes Film Festival). Her films feature strong female protagonists and are usually set against an important political background. Themes in her work include the effect of the political on the personal, and vice versa, as well as the relationships between female characters, often sisters. Von Trotta's formal and nuanced cinema observes the interior development of activists under social and political stress, and illuminates the way in which individual behavior can change a community.
