Copy & paste from Word into LATTE imports junk code

Description: Copying text directly from MS Word and other word processing programs and then pasting them into LATTE forums, labels, etc. can cause formatting code from the previous document to appear in LATTE; this formatting code occassionally corrupts courses. For more information, read the LATTE Help page on the issue and work-around solutions.

Status: There is no current solution in LATTE that can automatically strip the formatting code from MS Word.  (Last updated on 5/27/11.)

Workaround: LATTE users should refrain from direct copying & pasting from MS Word, or use a simple text-editor such as TextEdit (Mac) or Notepad/Wordpad (PC) to copy and paste unformatted text into LATTE.

Upload Excel / CSV files into gradebook

Description: Users can download LATTE gradebook data into Excel, but they cannot upload Excel spreadsheets into the gradebook.

Status: With the release of LATTE 1.6, instructors may upload CSV files to enter data into the gradebook. This is an advanced feature; instructors who are interested in using this feature should contact LATTE Help for assistance.

Graded comments reset by file upload

Description: In the advanced uploading of files assignment type, when an instructor is processing the grading of submitted files, s/he can lose her/his grades and comments anytime s/he forgets to save her/his changes before uploading a response file.

Status: LTS is investigating solutions

Workaround: In order to assure that comments and grades are not lost when grading advanced uploading of files assignments, instructors should upload the response file first and then add grade and comments.

Advanced uploading of files - instructor attachments unaccessable by students

Description: In the advanced uploading of files assignment type, when an instructor is grading the assignment and uploads a response file (such as a commented Word document) for the student to download and review, the student is unable to access the instructor's uploaded file unless the instructor also adds comments to the grading window's text box before saving.

Status: LTS is investigating solutions

Workaround: After uploading a response file, the instructor must type in text to grading window's text box (e.g. "See attached comments.") before saving the grade.

Making links to database articles in LATTE

Description: Faculty experience difficulty making links to database articles in their LATTE courses from off-campus.

Status: There is not one standard solution to connect to the 200+ LTS databases. Please contact LATTE Help for assistance.

Workaround: Making links to articles within databases while on campus reduces the likelihood of broken links.

Intermittent PDF access issues

Description: Users with Firefox on their Windows and Macintosh systems have reported varied, intermittent issues that affect access to PDF files.

Status:  LTS  monitoring Firefox development - may be fixed with future Firefox versions.

Workaround: Follow the direct link to the article when attempting to access the PDF.

Timed and conditional releases for activities and resources

Description: Instructors have asked for timed and/or conditional releases of activities and resources as was available in the previous course management system, WebCT. This means the instructor would no longer have to manually make an activity or resource available to students by making it visible.

Status: LTS is investigating solutions

Workaround: Some activities can be set with open and close dates, which create a window of time during they will be available and active to students, however the activity is still visible to participants regardless of these settings.

Ability to disable student e-mail across all courses

Description: When a instructor goes into the Participants list for her/his class and selects a student from the list, if s/he clicks on the small envelope icon beside that student’s email address (so that a red “X” appears on the icon and the email is grayed out) this disables all email being sent to that student's email address, not only in the course in question but in all of the courses in which the student is enrolled.

Status: LTS is investigating solutions
(Last updated on 1/26/10)

Workaround: If instructors do not wish for their students to receive messages from their LATTE course, verify that all active forums in that course are set to not force everyone to be subscribed.

Default for adding a new link to file or Web site resource opens in the same window

Description: Although the LATTE-wide default for new resources is set to open in new window, the "link to file or Web site" resource is defaulting to open in same window. The "Link to file or Web site" resource is generally used for uploading readings in PDF or Word format and directing students to useful online resources. If the open in same window default is left intact, when students click on the resource, it will replace the LATTE course page in the browser window, which can cause confusion. All other resource types (e.g. "Compose a text page" or "Compose a Web page" resources) are reflecting the LATTE-wide default of open in new window. The default settings of resources imported from old courses are not affected.

Status: LTS is investigating potential causes and solutions
(Last updated on 1/26/10)

Workaround: Professors can still manually set new resources to open in new window. Additionally students can override this setting by right-clicking or command-clicking on the resource and electing to open in a new tab or window.
