Rosemary and Gunnar DYBWAD(click on name for more info)

Rosemary and Gunnar DYBWAD, advocates for people with disabilities and experts in the field of mental retardation for several decades, donated their collection to the Howe Library in 1992.  This collection consists of journals, books, pamphlets, government reports, and articles spanning their years of work and is current and of international scope. Of special interest are the materials on self-advocacy and state programs.

Irving Kenneth ZOLA(click on name for more info)

Irving Kenneth Zola was an internationally known sociologist and advocate who specialized in the areas of disability studies and physical rehabilitative medicine. He was a professor at Brandeis University and editor of DISABILITY STUDIES QUARTERLY (DSQ). His papers, journals and books were given to the Howe Library by his family in 1995. The material on attitudes toward disability, especially as portrayed in the media is exceptional.

Elizabeth Monroe BOGGS(click on name for more info)

Elizabeth Monroe Boggs was one of the founders of the Association for Retarded Children (now called the ARC), later the President of that group as well as a prime mover in the parents' movement of the 1950s and 1960s. She also helped draft or lobbied for landmark federal legislation. Her papers from ARC became a part of our collection in 1997 and are notable for what they show of the inner workings of ARC as well as for material on legislation and the early parents' rights movement.

Edward J. LYNCH, Jr. (click on name for more info)

Edward J. Lynch, Jr. was a lawyer in the Office for Civil Rights, U.S. Department of HEW. He was instrumental in drafting the first civil rights protection for people with disabilities -- Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. In 1988 he won a discrimination lawsuit against his employer. This collection is notable for its material on employment discrimination and disability rights.

Florence S. FINKEL(click on name for more info)

Florence S Finkel, a past president of the Massachusetts Association for Retarded Citizens, was active in the state politics that led to the Consent Decree and the closing of Belchertown State School. She was a member of several Massachusetts Task Forces and Commissions. Her papers relating to MARC, the Consent Decree and Belchertown will be available for research in the year 2000.

David PFEIFFER(click on name for more info)

David Pfeiffer is a specialist in the field of disability studies. Currently associated with the Center on Disability Studies, University of Hawaii at Monoa, his local affiliation was with Suffolk University, Boston. His collection of books and articles in disability studies is being donated to the Howe Library and already encompasses over 250 book titles and 6 file drawers of articles, etc. on such subjects as accessibility, employment and the legal aspects of people with disabilities.

Walter E. FERNALD Historical Collection(click on name for more info)

This collection is based on the library of Walter E. Fernald, the first resident superintendent of the Massachusetts School for the Feeble Minded - later named the Walter E. Fernald State School. He was appointed in 1887 and remained the superintendent until his death in 1924. His library was called " the most complete library on Mental Defect to be found anywhere in the world." It consists of books and pamphlets from the first half of the Twentieth Century and includes material on education, testing, medicine, eugenics, delinquency, psychiatry, psychology and social science as well as mental retardation.
