The Review of Disability Studies: In order to address the need for an internationally-focused academic journal in the field of Disability Studies, the Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa is pleased to announce the publication of, “The Review of Disability Studies: An International Journal” (RDS). RDS was founded in 2003 by the late Dr. David Pfeiffer.

heller_logo.bmp (9286 bytes)Heller School.  Established in 1959, The Heller School for Social Policy and Management is ensconced atop the hills of Brandeis University, a 235-acre suburban campus nine miles west of Boston. You may know that Heller was the first school of its kind to bridge the gap between social welfare and policy. But you may not know that Heller faculty members have served as expert witnesses in a number of pivotal class action suits that changed the face of human services and established the right to education for children with disabilities in the United States. Or that Heller faculty and alumni have held a variety of presidential appointments, including the first two assistant secretaries of aging. Or that Heller research has led directly to congressional legislation such as the Social Health Maintenance Organization demonstration project in 1984 and the National Affordable Housing Act of 1990.

Also see the Nathan and Toby Starr Center where Gunnar Dybwad served as the Center's founding Director.  Currently Board Member Professor Marty Wyngaarden-Krauss is the Center's director.

lemberg.bmp (60470 bytes)Lemberg Children Center:  The Gersh and Sarah Lemberg Children’s Center, Inc. was founded in 1970 by members of the Brandeis University community who needed high quality day care for their young children. The program includes the Center for Early Childhood Teacher Development and the Rosemary F. Dybwad Consultation Services Program.  The Children's Center supports inclusive education in the early childhood and primary school teacher development curriculum. The Howe Library works with the Center in this effort.

arc.bmp (41038 bytes)National ARC: The Arc is the national organization of and for people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities and their families. It is devoted to promoting and improving supports and services for people with mental retardation and their families. The association also fosters research and education regarding the prevention of mental retardation in infants and young children.

Society For Disability Studies: The Society for Disability Studies is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization established to promote interdisciplinary research on humanistic and social scientific aspects of disability and chronic illness. Its membership includes social scientists, scholars in the humanities and disability rights advocates concerned with the problems of disabled people in society. The purpose of the society is to bring together people from diverse backgrounds and substantive concerns. The Society is committed to developing theoretical and practical knowledge about disability and to promoting the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in society.

Institute on Disability Culture.   "People with disabilities have forged a group identity.  We share a common history of oppression and a common bond of resiliance.  We generate art, music, literature and other expressions of our lives and our culture, infused from our experience of disability.  Most importantly, we are proud of ourselves as people with disabilities.  We claim our disabilities with pride as a part of our identity.   We are who we are: People with disabilities." Steve Brown, 1996 in Mainstream Magazine on the meaning of disability culture.

adapenv.bmp (34242 bytes)Adaptive Environment.  A non-profit organization, AE was founded in 1978 to address the environmental issues that confront people with disabilities and elderly people. Adaptive Environments promotes accessibility as well as universal design through education programs, technical assistance, training, consulting, publications and design advocacy. Its mission is to promote, facilitate, and advocate for international adoption of policies and designs that enable every individual, regardless of disability or age, to participate fully in all aspects of society.

Its mission is to generate knowledge, information and skills to secure the inclusion, citizenship, human rights and equality of people with intellectual and other disabilities.

cacl.bmp (105030 bytes)The Canadian Association for Community Living is Canada's national association dedicated to promoting the participation of people with intellectual disabilities in all aspects community life.We were founded in 1958 by parents of children with intellectual disabilities who wanted supports and services within the community instead of in institutions. Over the years, we have become one of Canada's ten largest charitable organizations, and have grown into a federation of 10 provincial and two territorial associations comprising of 420 local associations and over 40,000 members.

mddclogo.bmp (67198 bytes)Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council.  The mission of the Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council (MDDC) is to provide opportunities for people with developmental disabilities and their families to enhance independence, productivity, integration and inclusion. It is the Council's belief that the greatest impact on public policy occurs through self-advocacy, supported by the development and maintenance of strong coalitions. We work to bring people with developmental disabilities and their families together with policy makers to advocate on their own behalf. The Council fosters and supports coalitions with other advocacy and community groups, and supports close working relationships among and between the various public and private service providers
