Elizabeth
Monroe Boggs
1913-1996
Elizabeth Boggs was a scientist, mother, advocate, lobbyist, researcher, writer, leader . . . This collection of materials celebrates those aspects of her life which center on her roles as a co-founder of the National Association of Retarded Children (now called The Arc) and later its President, a leader in the drafting and lobbying for disability rights legislation and a member of the Presidents Panel on Mental Retardation and later the Presidents Committee on Mental Retardation. She was in the forefront of any activity involving mental retardation during this most active period of the 1950s and 1960s. The materials found here reflect her interest in a wide range of subjects -- PKU, special education, mental retardation research, government involvement in disability issues, University Affiliated Facilities, parent organization and the rights of people with disabilities are some of them. Welcome to the collection and its rich insight into this period of parent and government involvement!
