Brandeis Library: Text-only Walkthrough

Brandeis Library is made up 2 buildings, Goldfarb and Farber, which are connected on floors 1, 2, 3. Floors in the Library descend in order (e.g., floor 1 is above floor 2). Farber and Goldfarb each have a mezzanine (M) floor at the top, which are not connected. Farber has a fourth floor, which is below ground level.

Building Orientation

Brandeis Library is an east-west oriented building. All entrances are on Floor 1 (ground). The accessible entrance is the main entrance of Goldfarb, located off the plaza on the south side.

Farber 1

The entrance to Farber is located off the Library plaza to the left of Goldfarb. (Accessible entry available through Goldfarb main entrance, buildings are connected). Visitors arrive in the Starbucks cafe. Ordering is in front of you, seating is to the left. To the right is the Farber 1 Book display (Map key 1-1). Taking a right, Farber 101 Classroom (Map key 1-2) is on your left and the connector to Goldfarb is on your right.

Note: Farber is constructed as a squared loop with the classroom in the center. Study tables are arranged along the outside walls of the loop. Stairs to the mezzanine flank the entrance to the classroom.

The elevator is located past the entrance to Farber 101 Classroom, just around the corner on the left. Continuing past the elevator, is the Automation Lab (Map key 1-3). Turning left around the loop once more brings us to an accessible ladies' room, accessible water fountain, the fire stairwell, then an accessible men's room. One more turn left around the loop returns to the Cafe.

Farber M

Mezzanine is one floor above floor 1. It is a loft that looks over Farber floor 1. The main area in front of the elevator and main stairs consists of several seating areas (Map key M-2). At the back of the main area is a fire stairwell. To the right of the elevator are two group study rooms (Map key M-3). To the left, past the stairs, is the Maker Lab (Map key M-1).

Farber 2

Located one floor down from Farber 1 (ground). Elevator access to Farber 2 is restricted, please see the front desk for access. The Center for Teaching and Learning is located on Farber 2 (Map key 2-1). The fire stairwell is across from the elevator exit.

Farber 3

Located 2 floors down from Farber 1 (ground), Farber 3 can only be accessed by the fire stairwell, elevator or from the Goldfarb corridor. Standing in the doorway from the Goldfarb corridor, the Sound and Image Media Studio desk in in front of you. The media lab is on the right and the Getz Media classroom (Map key 3-1) is on the left. The elevator is located in front of the media lab. There are seating areas spread throughout the floor. There is a walkway that goes around the floor in a loop. Collections M are located in two sections in the middle of the floor. The fire stairwell in the back center and the stairwell to Farber 4 is behind the Getz desk. Restrooms and water fountain are located along the back of the loop on either side of the fire stairwell.

Farber 4

Located three floors down from Farber 1 (ground), Farber 3 can only be accessed by the stairwell in Farber 3, the fire stairwell and the elevator. This floor contains collections ML, MT and N. The floor has no seating and no restrooms.

Goldfarb

Goldfarb 1

The accessible main entrance is located off the Library plaza to the right of Farber. (A non-accessible secondary entrance is located on the east side of the building). When you enter the main entrance, the information and borrowing desk ahead and to the left. There is a narrow hallway to the right that leads to the Treasure Hall. On the far left is the corridor to Farber. Between the desk and the corridor is a stairwell to Goldfarb 2 and Farber 2. Passing the hallway to the Treasure Hall, on the right is a large area with public access computers and scanners called the Info Commons (Map key 1-5). Walking to the rear of the Info Commons brings you to the secondary non-accessible exit.

From the main entrance, straight ahead, passing Info Commons and slightly to the right is the Research Help Desk (Map key 1-7). Keeping the Research Help Desk on your right and continuing forward brings you to the printer alcove. There is seating available to the left across from the printers. Continuing forward you intersect a perpendicular hallway. Down the hall to the right is the main Goldfarb stairwell. The stairs leading up are facing you and the stairs going down are behind them. Facing the main stairs up, to your right is the elevator vestibule and fire stairwell. To your left are collections H-HM and HN-HZ, J-L. There is a narrow corridor between the 2 sections of collections that leads to the restrooms. On either side of the restrooms are stairwells to all floors of Goldberg.

From the perpendicular hallway intersection, continuing forward on the original path takes you along the outer edge of the collections H-HM. This leads you to the Technology Help Desk (Map key 1-13). There is also seating available along that outer hall. The opposite side of the building, beyond collections HN-HZ, J-L contains more seating options.

Traveling right down the perpendicular hall past the main stairs there is a collection of DVDs to your left. To the right is a large study space with seating. Standing in the study space with your back to the DVDs, on your right are the group study rooms and the Library consultation room (Map key 1-8). Straight ahead of the study space returns you to Info Commons. On the left are office (Map key 1-10).

Goldfarb M

Mezzanine is located one floor up from Goldfarb 1 (ground). As you enter the Mezzanine from the main stairs, the Judaica Office (Map key M-4) and Judaica Reading Room (Map key M-5) are on the right. The elevator vestibule and fire stairwell are located behind the main stairs on the same wall as Judaica. In front of the main stairs leading down is a large plexiglass display blocking much of the hallway.

Behind the display is the Gardner-Jackson Room (Map key M-6). Also in that corner is the Faculty Study. With the Gardner-Jackson room on your left, proceeding down a corridor, there are two rooms on your left (Vershbow Classroom and the Digital Scholarship Lab, Map keys M-7 and M-8). On your right, on the other side of the corridor are collections B, DS, PJ. At the end of the corridor is the Goldfarb 230 Classroom (Map key M-9).

Facing the Classroom, to your right is another corridor. Turning down that corridor on your right is another staircase to lower Goldfarb. After the stairwell, also on your right are the men's restroom, all-gender accessible restroom, ladies' restroom and water fountain. At the end of the corridor is another stairwell to lower Goldfarb. Across from the restrooms, next to Classroom 230 is the Writing Center (Map key M-10). Next to the Writing Center is the Brandeis University Press (Map key M-11). In the corner by the Brandeis University Press e is some seating. The hallway leading off from the Brandeis University Press returns you to Judaica.

Goldfarb 2

Located two floors down from Goldfarb 1 (ground). As you enter Goldfarb 2 from the main staircase, the stairs down to Goldfarb 3 are in front of you. Turning to your right, you enter two columns of stacks with a walkway through the center. Collection PQ-PS are on your left and PS-PZ, and Q-Z are on your right.

Following this walkway to the back of the floor you encounter an intersecting perpendicular walkway that follow the back wall. To your left along this wall to the left is a back staircase that goes both up and down, the men's restroom, and a water fountain straight ahead. Along the wall to the right is the women's restroom and another set up stairs that goes both up and down. Traveling down this walk way to the right you and taking a right at the wall you will come to another walkway that follows along the outside of the PS-PZ, and Q-Z stacks.

Along this wall are study carrels. If you follow this walkway to the end and turn right you are back at the main staircase. To the left of the main staircase is the elevator vestibule and the center fire stairs. Going straight and to the left from the main stairs you will intersect with walkway leading to your left. Going down this walkway you are passing stacks containing collections P-PQ on your right and study tables along your left. Coming to the end of this walkway, you encounter the hallway to Farber 2. On your left is University Archives and Special Collection and on your right is a staircase going up and down, as well as, the Library Administration offices.

Goldfarb 3

Located three floors down from Goldfarb 1 (ground). As you enter Goldfarb 3 from the main staircase you enter into a quite study area with carrel desks. Turning right, you are in a center aisle with stacks on both sides. To your left are collections DC-DZ and E. To your right are collections F-G. Following this walkway to the back of the floor you encounter an intersecting perpendicular walkway that follows the back wall. To your right along this back wall is the men's restroom, a water fountain, a set of stairs that goes up, and the women's restroom. If you travel down this walk way to the right you and take a right at the wall you will come to another walkway that follow along the outside of the F-G stacks.

Along this wall are study carrels. If you follow this walkway to the end and turn right you are at the back at the main staircase. The elevator vestibule is directly in front of you. A row of lockers is on this back wall of the main stairs. From the main stair case looking straight the outside wall of windows contains more study carrels. From the main stairs going to the right you pass along a walkway with the collections A, C, and D-DC on your right. Going forward to the end of this hallway you encounter Media Technology Services on your right and the walkway to Farber 3 in front of you. Next to Media Technology Services is a staircase going up and a staff swipe card egress.
