Susanne Shavelson
Assistant Director for Communications
Susanne A. Shavelson is assistant director for communications at the Mandel Center. She returned to Brandeis in 2010 after several years as a consultant to non-profit organizations. She has worked with many organizations in the Jewish community, as well as arts organizations, social service agencies and educational and health care institutions. Previously, as assistant director of Brandeis's Institute for Informal Jewish Education at Brandeis, Susanne played a key role in the IJE’s strategic planning, development and communications initiatives. She began her career at Brandeis at the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies and has also worked in the Hornstein Program. For several years she was the academic advisor to the Summer Internship Program at the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute.
Susanne earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in American Culture at the University of Michigan, where she wrote her dissertation on the English and Yiddish autobiographies of Jewish immigrant women. She has a B. A. in American Studies and English from Tufts University.
