DeLeT: MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING
Preparing Teacher-Leaders to Transform Jewish Day Schools
The Elementary MAT (DeLeT) (DeLeT: Day School Leadership through Teaching; the Hebrew word for “door”), is a degree program that opens a door to day school teaching. DeLeT prepares recent college graduates and career changers to teach general and Judaic studies in the elementary grades in Jewish day schools.
The program involves two summers of study on campus at Brandeis University and a year-long mentored internship in a local day school, partnered with an experienced mentor teacher. There is a sister DeLeT program at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in Los Angeles, which has distinct features and shares common elements with the program at Brandeis.
DeLeT is the Jewish Day School concentration of Brandeis University's Education Program Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Students in the Elementary MAT (DeLeT) program earn a Master of Arts in Teaching in elementary education, and are eligible for initial teaching licensure (grades 1 - 6) from the State of Massachusetts.
Admission is limited to 10-12 students per year. DeLeT students come from diverse professional, academic and personal backgrounds. The program is open to hard-working, Jewishly motivated, and intellectually curious individuals who love children and are passionate about learning and teaching.
Program Features:
- Full tuition scholarships, $10,000 stipend, and medical benefits are available.
- Year-long mentored internship
- Small, personal learning environment
- Close integration of courses and fieldwork
- Help in getting placed as a teacher in a Jewish Day School
- Support during the first two years of teaching

Secondary MAT/Tanakh (Bible)
The Brandeis secondary MAT program prepares Bible teachers for Jewish day schools, grades 7-12. In this program, students further their content knowledge by taking courses in Brandeis’ Near Eastern and Judaic Studies Department while learning about pedagogy and practice with Brandeis professors and master teachers at Gann Academy – New Jewish High School of Greater Boston and other local Jewish day middle and high schools. MAT/Bible students who complete the program receive a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brandeis.
