                  MRSEC Seed Grants
            Deadline: August 15, 2010

The NSF-supported Brandeis University Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (Brandeis-MRSEC) invites proposals from Brandeis University for developing outreach activities that are highly relevant to materials science and engineering.  We anticipate funding one proposal at a level of $10,000 for a one year, renewable period.  The proposals should meet one or more of the following criteria:

 (1) Promotion of the integration of research and education, and development of effective education/outreach activities that leverage participant expertise and interest, and address local and national needs. The proposed activity should have proven impact in improving scientific education or experiment with novel approaches.

  (2) Fostering increased participation in materials research and education of members of underrepresented groups in science and engineering (e.g., women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities) at all academic levels. We are encouraging proposals that develop cooperative programs with organization(s) serving predominantly underrepresented groups in science and engineering and/or predominantly undergraduate institutions.

Outreach grantees will be required to provide the MRSEC with information for the annual report and to acknowledge MRSEC support on any work supported by the outreach grant.

The deadline for submission of proposals is Aug 15, 2010. Applicants should submit proposals by E-mail, as a PDF attachment, to the MRSEC office at bottaro@brandeis.edu. Seed proposals will be reviewed by the MRSEC Executive Committee (Bob Meyer, Bulbul Chakraborty, Irv Epstein, Seth Fraden) and awards will be made on the basis of proposal quality. Applicants will be notified of decisions in late August. Funding of successful proposals will commence on or about September 1, 2010.

                                                     SEEDS

                 Brandeis University
                  MRSEC Seed Grants
              Deadline: August 15, 2010

NSF-supported Brandeis University Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (Brandeis-MRSEC) invites proposals from Brandeis University, Wellesley College, and Olin College  faculty for Seed project funding. Seed proposals must be highly relevant to materials science and engineering and should meet one or more of the following criteria: (i) support for junior faculty and for investigators changing fields; (ii) high-risk research projects; (iii) projects that could launch a new IRG or support the existing one; (iv) experimental programs to link the university effort in materials with industry and other sectors.

We anticipate funding three seed grants at a maximum of $50,000 each, including salary, fringe, and indirect costs, for one 12-month period. We anticipate that this should be sufficient for approximately 12 months support of an advanced graduate student.

Seed proposals will be reviewed by the MRSEC Executive Committee (Bob Meyer, Bulbul Chakraborty, Irv Epstein, Seth Fraden) and awards will be made on the basis of proposal quality, impact on Center growth and competitiveness. Special consideration will be given to (i) proposals from faculty who are currently not members of the MRSEC, (ii) proposals from junior faculty, (iii) proposals from teams of faculty investigators, and (iv) proposals with specific plans for cost sharing and leveraging existing resources. Seed grantees will be required to provide the MRSEC with information for the annual report and to acknowledge MRSEC support on any work supported by the Seed grant.

The term of a Seed grant is one year. Existing Seed grantees can reapply for Seed funding the following year as part of the annual Seed competition. Re-competing proposals may request funding equivalent to the support for the previous year, and they will be evaluated based on progress as well as the criteria specified above. Renewal beyond the second year is not guaranteed nor should it be expected.

The deadline for submission of proposals is Aug 15, 2010. Applicants should submit proposals by E-mail, as a PDF attachment, to the MRSEC office at bottaro@brandeis.edu.
