Women's basketball season tips off Monday night

Women's soccer and men's cross country teams have strong weekend

Lauren Orlando

WALTHAM, Mass. — The 2008-09 Brandeis women's basketball season gets underway Monday night when the Judges take on Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) at 7 p.m. in the Gosman Athletic Center.

Coach Carol Simon has guided the Brandeis women to the NCAA tournament in each of the past three seasons. Second-team All-University Athletic Association guard Jessica Chapin and honorable-mention forward Lauren Orlando return to a Judges squad that went 19-8 last season and rallied from 14 points down with seven minutes remaining to defeat the University of Southern Maine in the first round of the tournament.

The action will continue over the weekend, Nov. 22-23, when the team hosts Bowdoin, Western Connecticut State and Widener in the Ninth Annual Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament.

Those who can't make it to the Gosman Athletic Center to see the Judges live can listen to coverage on WBRS or follow LiveStats.

It was a tremendous weekend for the Brandeis fall teams on Nov. 15-16. The women's soccer team won its second straight ECAC tournament on its home turf. The Judges shut out Emmanuel College 4-0 on Saturday, and defended their title by defeating the University of New England 3-1 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in Williamstown, Mass., the men's cross country team placed fourth at the New England regional, earning its first berth at the NCAA Division III championships since 1998. Coach John Evans will lead his squad among a field of 36 at Hanover College in Indiana on Nov. 22.
