For Supervisors

General Information

For answers to general questions and step-by-step instructions on how to hire a student employee please review the document titled How to Hire a Student. We recommend that you print out this handy form so that you may refer to it as necessary. You will also find answers to common questions in our FAQ guide. For more detailed information please review the Student Employment Handbook for Supervisors.

Please note that hiring priority is granted to students who are awarded Federal Work-Study or University Employment as part of their financial aid packages. Students who do not have Federal Work-Study or University Employment must wait until October 1st to begin searching for on-campus employment. If you believe you have a circumstance that requires an exemption from this rule, please contact the Office of Student Financial Services for information on how to proceed with an exemption request. No exemptions will be granted for available positions that were not posted campus-wide through the Office of Student Financial Services.

Incoming international students may not have Social Security Numbers when they arrive on campus. However, this should not deter you from hiring a qualified international student. If you would like to hire an international student who is not yet in possession of a Social Security Number, please complete the International Student Employment Form. The student should bring this form, along with a photocopy of the completed New Hire/Rehire Form, to the International Students and Scholars Office in Kutz Hall, room 215. The ISSO will then assist the student to apply for a Social Security Number, after which time the Office of Student Financial Services will assist the student to complete Form I-9 and Form W-4. In most cases, the student will be eligible to begin working in 10-14 days.

The Office of Student Financial Services will not honor spot jobs, stipends and one-time payments. All jobs must be hourly, paid positions with a job description on file with the Office of Student Financial Services. All wage rates are subject to the approval of the Office of Student Financial Services. To ensure hiring equity, all available positions must be posted with the Office of Student Financial Services for a minimum of five (5) business days.
