The Brandeis Emergency Medical Corps (BEMCo), a student volunteer organization that operates under the guidance of the director of public safety and the director of health services, serves the emergency first-aid needs of the Brandeis community. The Brandeis Health Center, operated by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, provides physician and nursing care for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic medical illnesses and injuries. Services provided in medicine, gynecology and orthopedics are covered by the student health fee. Aftercare for illnesses that need hospitalization is also provided. In addition, allergy shots, influenza vaccines, and traveler’s medications are administered during medical office hours.

The Psychological Counseling Center provides counseling for students in times of stress, and encourages them to ask for help with their most immediate concerns. The staff is experienced in dealing with deeper developmental and psychological issues ranging from stress and depression to substance abuse and eating disorders. No concern is too large or too small to be met with respect and care. The counseling center maintains the strictest standards of privacy and confidentiality and serves as a resource to the Brandeis community.

The 25-member campus police force is responsible for campuswide security and safety patrol, traffic control and enforcement and protective custody of university offices, classrooms and residence halls. The department places special emphasis on preventive and protective care for all members of the university community.

Brandeis encourages and supports all expressions of spiritual and religious life on campus. The university’s three chapels — the Berlin Chapel (Jewish), the Bethlehem Chapel (Catholic) and the Harlan Chapel (Protestant) — serve as the focal point of spiritual and religious activity on campus. In addition, a Muslim prayer room and resource center is located in the Usdan Student Center. Several clubs and organizations are available to students seeking information or fellowship, including the Hillel Foundation, the Catholic Student Organization, the Brandeis Muslim Student Association and the Christian Fellowship.

Intercultural Center

The Intercultural Center is a meeting place for clubs and organizations, which are open to all and whose members celebrate different cultures and heritages. The center is alive with parties, concerts, dances and seminars. Ideas conceived in the center have gone on to become community-wide traditions. Among them are Culture X, a multicultural celebration of dance, music and poetry, and Pachanga, the international dance party that draws up to 1,000 students every year. Asian Awareness Week, Caribbean Week, Hispanic Heritage Month and the Vietnamese Spring Festival are just a few of the other events originating at the Intercultural Center that unite and enliven life for the entire Brandeis community.
